AceShowbiz - Legendary TV will relaunch "Lost in Space". The company has reportedly been developing a remake to the 1965 cult sci-fi series created and produced by Irwin Allen. The remake has been a passion project for the Legendary Entertainment heads, according to Deadline.

"Dracula Untold" scribes Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless are hired to write the reboot project. They will also executive produce the remake with Kevin Burns of Synthesis Entertainment, who holds the rights to the original series through Space Prods. Inc.

The original series is set in 1997 and follows the Robinson family who is sent by the U.S. to colonize deep space. But the evil Dr. Zachary Smith sabotages the trip, causing the ship to veer off course and become lost in space. The show ran for three seasons before it was canceled in 1968 due to softening ratings and rising costs.

Burns, through Synthesis, reportedly tried to make a TV movie based on "Lost in Space" 15 years ago, but the project never saw the light of the day following the death of Jonathan Harris who played Smith. In 1998, a feature film based on Allen's creation was released.

The was also a plan to remake the TV series, with Doug Petrie writing and John Woo directing the pilot. The reboot landed at the WB in a bidding war, but it was never greenlit as a series.
