"American Horror Story: Freak Show" hasn't premiered yet, but fans can now get a look at the opening credits. FX has released the main title, which is as dark and creepy as the show's premise is.
Unlike the previous years, this season's main title is a stop-motion animation. It features circus characters like a three-legged woman and a creepy clown. There are also some disturbing shots showing some skeletons and baby dolls taking off and exchanging their heads.
"Freak Show" is set in the quiet, sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida, in 1952. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience.
Jessica Lange plays Elsa Mars, a former German cabaret star who manages the freak show. Among the attractions are Jimmy (Evan Peters) who has lobster-like hands, his mother, bearded lady Ethel (Kathy Bates), conjoined twins Bette and Dot (Sarah Paulson), a strongman named Dell Toledo (Michael Chiklis) who is also Ethel's ex-husband, and Dell's three-breasted wife Desiree Dupree (Angela Bassett).
John Carroll Lynch plays the season's main villain, a murderer named Twisty the Clown, with Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe, Wes Bentley, Finn Wittrock, Patti LaBelle and Matthew Bomer also among the cast.
Roberts, who admitted she's a fan the first two seasons before she joined the cast in the third season, said the upcoming installment "scares [her] to death." She added, "I have to say, 'Freak Show' is really scarier...I read the script and I was having nightmares." She plays Maggie, a con artist who looks normal on the surface, "but that might not be true," she teased.
The new season of the horror anthology series debuts Wednesday, October 8 at 10 P.M. ET/PT on FX.
