"Guardians of the Galaxy" has successfully replaced "Iron Man" as Marvel Studios' third highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office. The action-comedy flick starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper among others garnered an estimated $3.8 million over the weekend, collecting a total of $319.2 million after nine weeks of release. "Iron Man", meanwhile, reached a total gross of $318.41 million.

Marvel Studios' first placer, "The Avengers", garnered $623 million. "Guardians of the Galaxy", however, is unlikely to surpass "Iron Man 3" which collected $409 million at the domestic box office.

Director James Gunn who also wrote the first installment will return to his directing position for "Guardians of the Galaxy 2". The studio announced the release date for the sequel during a panel at the SDCC, saying that it would hit U.S. theaters on July 28, 2017.
