AceShowbiz - "The Avengers" has yet to arrive in the U.S. theaters, but already director Joss Whedon discussed his vision for its sequel. Sharing to SFX, the "Buffy and the Vampire Slayer" creator opened up that he wants the follow-up film to be "smaller" and "more painful" than the first movie, which will hit cinemas nationwide on May 4.
Asked how "Avengers 2" could possibly best its mega-budgeted predecessor, the 47-year-old moviemaker stated, "By not trying to. By being smaller. More personal, more painful." He added, "By being the next thing that should happen to these characters, and not just a rehash of what seemed to work the first time. By having a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself."
The New Yorker then joked that the possible sequel might be inspired by classic mob drama "The Godfather II" by "having flashbacks to young Michael Andolini escaping Sicily to come to New York, where he will be called Coleone." He continued, "Sequels are always better when that happens."
During the chat, Whedon explained that he had worked hard to give each member of the Earth Mightiest Heroes enough screen time. Of the reason why, he said, "I want to know what makes them tick, what makes them flawed, what makes them fight, and ultimately, what makes them awesome. I go these movies for those moments when the heroes define themselves, either through action or deliciously overwritten speeches."
The highly anticipated "Avengers" is set in the time when an unexpected enemy emerges and threatens global safety and security. Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.
Spanning the globe, a daring recruitment effort begins. Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, the Hulk and Hawkeye are chosen to assemble to fight the biggest foes no single hero could withstand.
Lining up in the cast ensemble are Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson.
