Instead of focusing on the scenes in Barsoom, the long snippet highlights the titular hero's background story as a troubled former military captain in Virginia.

AceShowbiz - Five days before opening wide in theaters across the U.S. on Friday, March 9, "John Carter" debuted a 10-minute clip that features some never-before-seen footage. Instead of focusing on spectacular battle scenes in Mars a.k.a Barsoom as highlighted in the previous promo videos, the long snippet offers a longer and better look at the background story of Taylor Kitsch's titular hero.

The fresh clip opens with a scene where Daryl Sabara's Edgar Rice Burroughs is given a journal of his deceased uncle, John Carter. As he begins to read the book, the footage cuts to a flashback scene in 1868 where Carter is involved in a bar brawl.

He then gets arrested and thrown into a jail by Bryan Cranston's Colonel Powell. Later, the protagonist is seen escaping the jail and being pursued by a group of cavalry before accidentally embarking on a fight against horse-riding Indians.

Based on Burroughs' classic novel, "John Carter" tells the story of a war-weary, former military captain, who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris.

Director of Oscar-winning "Wall-E" and "Finding Nemo", Andrew Stanton, serves behind the lens and co-writes the script for the much awaited epic movie. Also rounding up the cast ensemble are Lynn Collins, Willem Dafoe, Mark Strong, Samantha Morton, Dominic West, Thomas Haden Church, James Purefoy and Ciaran Hinds.
