'Cowboys and Aliens' and 'The Smurfs' Tied on Top of Box Office

It is estimated that both movies earn $36.2 million each this weekend, while Steve Carell-starring 'Crazy, Stupid, Love.' debuts at number five.

AceShowbiz - "Cowboys and Aliens" and "The Smurfs" *are tied for the first position at North American Box Office. Both newly-debuted films earn estimated $36.2 million each, with the winner to be unveiled when the final results come out on Monday.

Falling short of the predicted $40 million opening, sci-fi film "Cowboys and Aliens" which comes from director Jon Favreau faces an unexpected fierce battle with family movie "The Smurfs". The animated film, meanwhile, makes $15 million more than the projected $25 million although it was panned by many critics.

Another new release "Crazy, Stupid, Love." opens to $19.1 million to secure the fifth place on the chart. It draws audience which largely consist of older women, with 70|percent| of them over the age of 25, while 64|percent| was female.

"Captain America: The First Avenger" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II", meanwhile, are pushed two positions each. The superhero flick adds $25.6 million on the third place, while the final installment of the wizard boy film series rakes in $22 million as the fourth placer.

With the additional income, "Deathly Hallows: Part II" hits $1 billion mark which was anticipated towards the end of this week. The movie has grossed $318.5 million domestically and $690 million internationally within only 17 days.

*UPDATE (Aug. 2, 2011 02:06 GMT): When the final figures came out on Monday, August 1, it was revealed that "Cowboys and Aliens" earned higher than "The Smurfs". Thus, the sci-fi movie claimed the top spot at the box office, while the animated film landed on the runner-up position.
