The nominees for MTV Video Music Awards in the Best New Artist category have been downsized to mere five. Contending for the coveted prize are none other than German rock band Tokio Hotel and teen pop sensation Miley Cyrus. Both acts are taking the storm this year with their music videos "Ready , Set, Go!" and "7 Things" respectively but will still face a tough competition from three others, namely "I Kissed a Girl" crooner Katy Perry, American Idol champion last year Jordin Sparks and country darling Taylor Swift.

The Best New Artist nominees which are open for voting at MTV.com already, are revealed on FNMTV yesterday (August 8) along with the nominees for category of Best Dancing in a Video. Those falling under the second category are Ne-Yo for "Closer", Madonna for "4 Minutes", Chris Brown for "Forever", Danity Kane for "Damaged" and The Pussycat Dolls for "When I Grow Up".

List of the new categories will join those which have been announced earlier including Best Male and Female Videos, Best Pop Video as well as Best Hip-Hop Video. Two other categories, Best Rock Video and the ultimate Video of the Year will announce their nominees on next week's episode of FNMTV on August 15 and fans can have a say on who should make the cut until Wednesday, August 13. Log on to MTV.com to vote for all the categories.

The 2008 MTV VMAs will be held on September 7 at 9 P.M. local time and broadcast live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Hollywood. Russell Brand will host this year's show while Lil Wayne and Jonas Brothers take the performing duty.
