Tom King is an influential comic book writer and novelist best known for his critically acclaimed work on major superhero franchises for DC Comics, including a defining run on Batman and the award-winning limited series Mister Miracle. Born on July 15, 1978, in Los Angeles, California, King initially pursued a career outside of comics, working as a counterterrorism officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. His experiences in the CIA, including deployments to the Middle East, deeply informed his later storytelling, infusing his work with themes of trauma, morality, and the psychological toll of violence. King graduated from Columbia University, where he studied political science and history, before entering government service.

After leaving the CIA in 2010, King turned to writing, first publishing the novel "A Once Crowded Sky" in 2012. He broke into the comic book industry by winning a short story contest for DC Comics, which led to his first professional work on Grayson alongside writer Tim Seeley. This series, which reimagined former Robin Dick Grayson as a secret agent, garnered critical praise and established King as a rising talent. His subsequent series The Omega Men, a politically charged space opera featuring the character Kyle Rayner, won him further acclaim and an Eisner Award nomination.

King’s major breakthrough came with his work on The Vision for Marvel Comics, a twelve-issue limited series that reimagined the android superhero as the patriarch of a synthetic family. The series was hailed as a masterpiece, earning multiple Eisner Award nominations and winning the 2017 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series. This success led to his appointment as the primary writer for DC Comics’ Batman series in 2016, a tenure that lasted for 85 issues. His run on Batman was marked by ambitious story arcs, including "I Am Gotham," "The War of Jokes and Riddles," and the wedding of Batman and Catwoman, though the latter’s postponement divided fans. He also wrote the critically acclaimed Mister Miracle with artist Mitch Gerads, a twelve-issue series that explored existential despair and won the 2019 Eisner Award for Best Limited Series.

In addition to his superhero work, King has written original graphic novels and limited series such as The Sheriff of Babylon, a crime drama set during the Iraq War that drew directly from his CIA experiences, and Strange Adventures, a cosmic mystery starring Adam Strange. His writing is characterized by dense, literary dialogue, a focus on psychological depth, and a deconstructive approach to genre conventions. King remains an active and prolific figure in the industry, continuing to produce new series for DC Comics, including Human Target and The Gotham Year One, while also working on film and television adaptations of his work, ensuring his legacy as one of the most distinctive voices in modern comics.
