Michael Sam emerged as a significant figure in American sports not only for his prowess on the football field but as a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ visibility in professional athletics. His journey, marked by both groundbreaking achievement and formidable challenge, began in Galveston, Texas, where he was born Michael Alan Sam Jr. on January 7, 1990, to JoAnn Turner and Michael Alan Sam Sr. Football became his path forward, leading him to the University of Missouri where he developed into a formidable defensive lineman for the Missouri Tigers.

His senior season in 2013 cemented his legacy in college football, as Sam was named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Defensive Player of the Year and earned unanimous All-American honors. His performance positioned him as a prospect for the National Football League (NFL). In a move that would capture national attention, Sam publicly came out as gay prior to the 2014 NFL Draft, a first for a draft-eligible player. His courage was met with both widespread support and intense scrutiny. The St. Louis Rams selected Sam in the seventh round, making him the first publicly gay player to be drafted into the NFL.
