Michael Gavin Joseph Bisping was born on February 28, 1979, in Nicosia, Cyprus, to British parents, and grew up in Clitheroe, Lancashire, England. Before becoming a professional fighter, he worked in various jobs, including as a postman, a plasterer, and a factory worker. He began training in martial arts as a teenager, initially in kickboxing and later in mixed martial arts, which set the foundation for a career that would make him one of the most recognizable figures in British combat sports history.

Bisping turned professional in 2004 and quickly built a reputation on the British circuit, capturing the Cage Rage light heavyweight title. His breakthrough came in 2006 when he won the light heavyweight tournament of The Ultimate Fighter 3, which earned him a UFC contract. At UFC 78 in 2007, he became the first British fighter to compete in a UFC main event. Over the following years, he became a fixture in the middleweight division, known for his durability, cardio, and outspoken personality. In 2013, he suffered a detached retina after a fight-ending head kick from Vitor Belfort, leaving him legally blind in his right eye, a condition he concealed for years to continue competing.

Bisping's crowning achievement came in 2016 at UFC 199, where he knocked out Luke Rockhold on short notice to win the UFC middleweight title, becoming the first British fighter to hold a UFC championship. He defended the belt against Dan Henderson at UFC 204 before losing it to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 217 in 2017. After a subsequent knockout loss to Kelvin Gastelum three weeks later, he announced his retirement from the sport. His contributions to mixed martial arts were recognized in 2019 when he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Following his retirement, Bisping transitioned into sports commentary and analysis, becoming a prominent voice for the UFC. He has also pursued an acting career, appearing in films such as XXX: Return of Xander Cage in 2017, Triple Threat in 2019, and Red Sonja. He portrayed the notorious bare-knuckle fighter Roy Shaw in the British sports drama My Name Is Lenny in 2017. On television, he has appeared in series including Strike Back, Twin Peaks, MacGyver, Magnum P.I., and Warrior. He continues to work as a commentator and analyst while maintaining an active presence in film and television.
