Matthew James Bellamy is an English musician and producer best known as the lead vocalist, guitarist, pianist, and principal lyricist for the rock band Muse. Recognized for his eccentric stage persona, wide tenor vocal range, and formidable musicianship, Bellamy has become one of the most distinctive frontmen in contemporary rock music, steering his band to global success across more than two decades.
Bellamy was born on 9 June 1978 in Cambridge, England, and his family later relocated to Teignmouth, Devon, where he spent much of his formative years. It was in this coastal town that he formed Muse with schoolmates, laying the groundwork for a career that would eventually reach international audiences. The band released their debut album, Showbiz, in 1999, introducing Bellamy's dramatic vocal style and ambitious musical vision to the world.
Over the following years, Muse grew into one of the most successful rock acts of their generation. With the band, Bellamy has won two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Album, first for The Resistance in 2009 and again for Drones in 2015. Muse have also collected two Brit Awards for Best British Live Act, five MTV Europe Music Awards, and eight NME Awards. The group has sold over 30 million albums worldwide, and in 2012 they received the Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors. Bellamy's songwriting and performance style have been central to the band's identity throughout its evolution.
Beyond his work with Muse, Bellamy has pursued solo compositions and in 2021 released Cryosleep, a compilation of solo tracks. He also plays bass in the supergroup the Jaded Hearts Club and produced their debut album, You've Always Been Here, released in 2020. His interests extend into instrument craftsmanship as well: since the early 2000s he has worked with Manson Guitar Works, based in Devon, to create his signature electric guitars, and in 2019 he purchased a majority stake in the company.
Through his multifaceted career as a performer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur, Matt Bellamy remains a defining figure in modern rock, celebrated for his inventive musicianship and his enduring influence with Muse.
