Emerging from the stark landscapes of Sunnfjord, Norway, in 1992, Gorgoroth established itself as one of the most sonically abrasive and ideologically provocative forces in the Norwegian black metal scene. Founded by guitarist and principal songwriter Infernus, the band took its name from the dead plateau of darkness in J.R.R. Tolkien's Mordor, a fitting moniker for music dedicated to themes of Satanism, misanthropy, and darkness. Gorgoroth's notoriety stems not only from their raw, aggressive sound but from a long history of controversial live performances that have cemented their status as extreme music iconoclasts.

The band's formation was rooted in the fertile and tumultuous early-90s black metal environment. Infernus, alongside initial vocalist Goat Pervertor and drummer Hat, quickly recorded the demo "A Sorcery Written in Blood" in 1993. This led to a contract with Embassy Productions and the release of their debut album, "Pentagram," in 1994. The album, characterized by its primal fury and lo-fi production, became a cult classic and a foundational text for the genre's second wave. The following year's "Antichrist" further refined their sound, featuring the distinctive vocal work of Pest, who would become one of the band's most recognized frontmen.

Gorgoroth's career has been defined by relentless artistic vision and significant internal turmoil, with Infernus remaining the sole constant member. The band saw a succession of vocalists, including Gaahl and King ov Hell, who played pivotal roles during the 2000s. This era produced some of Gorgoroth's most acclaimed and professionally recorded works, such as "Twilight of the Idols" (2003) and "Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam" (2006). Their live shows during this period became legendary for their extreme theatrics, involving animal carcasses, blood, and mock crucifixions, leading to legal issues and widespread controversy that often overshadowed the music itself.

A very public and acrimonious split occurred in 2007, when Gaahl and King ov Hell attempted to claim the Gorgoroth name, leading to a high-profile court case that Infernus ultimately won. Reclaiming control, Infernus rebuilt the band and has since continued to release new material, including the albums "Quantos Possunt ad Satanitatem Trahunt" (2009) and "Instinctus Bestialis" (2015). Today, Gorgoroth endures as a pillar of orthodox black metal, their legacy secured by a formidable discography and an uncompromising, often confrontational, dedication to their aesthetic and philosophical principles. They remain a defining and deeply influential act within the extreme metal underground.
