Fuel
Fuel emerged as one of the most prominent rock bands of the post-grunge era, achieving mainstream success in the late 1990s and early 2000s with a string of hard-hitting, melodic singles. The band is best known for its powerful 2000 anthem "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)," a track that dominated rock radio and became a defining song of the period. Hailing from Obion County, Tennessee, the group formed in 1989, initially building a dedicated regional following before breaking through to a national audience.
The classic lineup that propelled Fuel to stardom consisted of vocalist Brett Scallions, guitarist Carl Bell, bassist Jeff Abercrombie, and drummer Kevin Miller. They honed their sound through relentless touring, eventually catching the attention of major labels. Their 1998 debut album, Sunburn, served as their commercial introduction, featuring the hit singles "Shimmer" and "Bittersweet." The album's blend of introspective lyrics and aggressive guitar work resonated strongly, achieving platinum certification and establishing Fuel as a formidable new force in rock.
Fuel's commercial peak arrived with their sophomore effort, 2000's Something Like Human. The album was a massive success, driven by the colossal singles "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" and "Innocent." "Hemorrhage" in particular became a rock radio staple, topping the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart for a staggering 13 weeks and crossing over to pop charts, earning platinum certification for the album. This period solidified their place on festival stages and as headliners, sharing tours with acts like Creed and 3 Doors Down.
The band's third album, 2003's Natural Selection, continued their streak with the hit "Falls on Me," but it also marked a period of internal transition. Vocalist Brett Scallions departed the band in 2006, leading to a period of instability with various singers, including Toryn Green, before Scallions eventually returned. Throughout these changes, founding guitarist and primary songwriter Carl Bell remained the creative constant. The band released Angels & Devils in 2007 and Puppet Strings in 2014, the latter featuring Scallions back on lead vocals.
Fuel's legacy is anchored in their early 2000s dominance, with their music remaining a staple on rock playlists. Their songs have been featured in numerous films and television shows, including The Punisher and Smallville, introducing their music to new generations. Despite lineup shifts over the years, the band continues to perform, celebrating the catalog of anthems that cemented their status as icons of the post-grunge landscape.
