Elliot Hegarty is a distinguished British film and television director whose versatile career spans acclaimed comedies, prestigious dramas, and award-winning commercials on both sides of the Atlantic. Known for his sharp comedic timing and adept handling of ensemble casts, Hegarty has earned multiple BAFTA nominations and an International Emmy, establishing himself as a significant creative force in contemporary television.

Born in London, England, Hegarty first garnered significant attention in the world of advertising. The first three commercials he directed for Club 18–30 won eight awards, including a Bronze Lion at Cannes and accolades at the British Television Advertising Awards. This early success led to a nomination for Best New Director and a spot in the prestigious New Directors' Showcase at Cannes in 2001, paving the way for a prolific commercial career working with major clients like Guinness, Toyota, and KFC.

His transition into television and film was marked by early work on British series such as Star Stories, The Kevin Bishop Show, and Moving Wallpaper. Hegarty quickly became a sought-after director for comedy, helming multiple episodes of Jack Whitehall's popular series Bad Education, which later spawned The Bad Education Movie. His feature film debut, however, was the 2000 film County Kilburn, which he also wrote. He further demonstrated his range with adaptations of David Walliams's children's books, directing The Midnight Gang with Alan Davies and Grandpa's Great Escape featuring Tom Courtenay and Jennifer Saunders.

Hegarty's skill with character-driven comedy led him to the United States, where he directed over 35 episodes of network sitcoms including Black-ish, The Middle, Suburgatory, and Mr. Sunshine. Back in the UK, he directed critically praised series like Lovesick for Netflix and Cheaters for BBC1. His association with Apple TV+ proved particularly fruitful, as he directed episodes of the Emmy-winning phenomenon Ted Lasso, starring Jason Sudeikis, and led the first block of Season 3 of the heartfelt comedy Trying.

In recent years, Hegarty has achieved new heights in dramatic television. His work as lead director on the Disney+ series Rivals, featuring a star-studded cast including David Tennant, Aidan Turner, and Katherine Parkinson, earned him the International Emmy for Best Drama in 2025. This accolade added to his previous honors, which include two BAFTA nominations and a win for Best Comedy at the British Comedy Awards. He is currently serving as Lead Director and Executive Producer on Season 2 of Rivals, which is scheduled for release in 2026, continuing to shape one of television's most anticipated dramas.
