Alan Alda, born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28, 1936, is an American actor and filmmaker whose career has spanned seven decades, cementing his status as one of the most beloved figures in entertainment. He is best known for his iconic portrayal of Captain Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pierce in the CBS wartime sitcom MAS*H, a role that earned him six Primetime Emmy Awards and six Golden Globe Awards across the series' eleven-season run from 1972 to 1983. Alda was not only the star of the show but also a prolific writer and director for numerous episodes, showcasing his multifaceted talents and helping shape the series' blend of comedy and drama.

Born in New York City to actor parents, Alda developed a passion for performing early in his life. He served in the United States Army Reserve before studying English at Fordham University, where he also honed his craft in theater. His early career included stage work, with a Broadway debut in Purlie Victorious in 1961, and he later earned Tony Award nominations for his performances in The Apple Tree, Jake's Women, and Glengarry Glen Ross. His film career took off in the 1970s with roles in Same Time, Next Year and California Suite, and he made his directorial debut with The Four Seasons in 1981. Alda received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Senator Owen Brewster in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, and his other notable films include Crimes and Misdemeanors, Manhattan Murder Mystery, Everyone Says I Love You, Flirting with Disaster, Bridge of Spies, and Marriage Story.

Beyond his film and stage work, Alda had a memorable recurring role as Senator Arnold Vinick on the NBC drama The West Wing, for which he won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He also earned Emmy nominations for his guest appearances on ER, 30 Rock, and The Blacklist, and had recurring roles on The Big C, Horace and Pete, Ray Donovan, and The Good Fight. In 2019, he received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in recognition of his distinguished career. Alda also hosts the podcast Clear+Vivid with Alan Alda and previously hosted Science Clear+Vivid, reflecting his lifelong interest in science communication.
