Seeing as she hasn't quite bonded with the Carmichaels yet, Maxine decides to have Jerrod's family over for dinner - and she's going all out with fatty comfort food to impress them. She figures if she doesn't act like herself and pretends to be the perfect homemaker, maybe they'll finally like her! Unfortunately, Jerrod may totally undermine her plan, as he demands she include a kale salad on the menu. He's been trying to get his parents to eat healthier for years, and now that they're under his roof, they have to eat his food.

After trying Maxine's cooking, Joe and Cynthia are stunned - she didn't "Maxine" the dinner. It turns out the family has been using Maxine as a verb for "ruin," which just spurs Maxine to try even harder for their acceptance.

Suddenly, after being force-fed a bite of kale salad, Joe doubles over in chest pain, and the family rushes him to the hospital. Luckily, he didn't have a heart attack, but the doctor says he needs to have a stent inserted. Jerrod is especially concerned, seeing as Joe already had triple bypass surgery, and insists his dad get the surgery and start actually taking care of himself. But Joe refuses - he sees the triple bypass as a do-over for his arteries, and he's going to keep eating ribs and cheese until the bitter end.

Back at the house, Joe and Cynthia return to life as usual, and Jerrod desperately tries to convince them to take care of themselves. He begs his mom to cook healthier options, even getting her a treadmill and a gift card to Whole Foods, but she stubbornly refuses to stop making Joe's favorite fattening meals. In fact, instead of using the gift card to buy fruits and vegetables, Joe buys an organic fair trade non-pasteurized hemp hammock there instead, which he considers a relaxing addition to the living room. Furious, Jerrod rips into his father because he's "not done with him." Joe takes this to mean Jerrod's life would fall apart without him, which isn't exactly what Jerrod says, but hey, it does the trick! Joe agrees to get the procedure... and then comes home and eats a slice of cake.
