The Amazing Race Episode 18.09 We're Good American People

Cowboys Jet & Cord once again got off to a slow start and this time they couldn't recover, especially after Harlem Globetrotters Flight Time & Big Easy U-Turned them. Meanwhile, best friends Zev & Justin won their fourth leg of the race.

DOUBLE U-TURN

Departing the Pit Stop in first place at 3:14am, best friends Zev & Justin ripped open their clue instructing them to travel by train to Feldkirch, Austria, and then cross the border into the country of Liechtenstein at Schaanwald. Once they crossed the border into the tiny country that is one-fifth the size of New York, teams would find their next clue.

With the announcement that a Double U-Turn would appear somewhere in the leg, teams knew they had to race smart and race hard to avoid seeing their pictures on the U-Turn board. After fighting with Kent for the entire last leg, Vyxsin noted, "This kind of interaction easily could be fatal for us." Kent added, "We're just going to play it positive and I think it'll be a great day." On Jet & Cord's performance thus far, Big Easy said, "They won't make a mistake and that's motivated us to keep going." When Cord opined that he felt that he and Jet had targets on their backs, Jet added, "I don't know if we're outcasts, but there sure hasn't been anybody wanting to just buddy up with us." Leaving in last place, father and daughter Gary & Mallory knew they also faced a Speed Bump, hoping to knock that out quickly and get back in the race.

ENJOYING THE VIEW

All six teams shared the same train from Salzburg to Feldkirch, giving everyone time to mingle and enjoy the incredibly scenic views. Hanging out with the Globetrotters, Jen later said, "Flight Time & Big Easy have become great friends of ours. Big Easy, I like his energy and Flight Time is a great looking guy." On traveling through the snow-covered Alps, Mallory commented, "This part of the world is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to." Gary added, "I didn't want to lay down and sleep and miss something. The little villages you'd go through, they were immaculate. They were like postcards. We're so lucky to be able to do this again."

WELCOME TO LIECHTENSTEIN

Arriving in Feldkirch, Austria, the six teams ran off the train and jumped into taxis to take them to the border at Schaanwald, Liechtenstein. While cowboys Jet & Cord exited the train station in first place followed closely by the Globetrotters, Gary & Mallory fell into last place immediately when their taxi driver took the time to slowly input directions into his GPS instead of just driving towards the border like the other taxis. A stressed Gary said, "We're gonna lose ten minutes and we still got our Speed Bump."

Led by Zev & Justin, whose taxi driver made some smooth moves to help the best friends take the lead, the five teams ahead of Gary & Mallory crossed the border at Schaanwald and opened their next clue to find a Roadblock. In it, one team member had to use a motorized bicycle, also known as a Solex, a map for guidance, and an odometer to measure the entire length of Liechtenstein. With a total area of less than 62 square miles, Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in the world. Once teams finished their 22-kilometer ride, they had to present their guess to six-time Olympic ski racer Marco Buchel. If teams were correct, Marco would direct them to their next destination, Gutenberg Castle. However, if the answer was incorrect, teams had to ride back to the starting point and measure the country again.

FILL 'ER UP

After Justin, Flight Time, Jen, Vyxsin, and Jet all put on their helmet and goggles and hopped on their motorized bikes, Gary & Mallory finally arrived at the border of Liechtenstein. However, before the father and daughter could join the other teams at the Roadblock, they had to perform their Speed Bump for coming in last place in the previous leg. In this Speed Bump, Gary & Mallory had to put their mathematical skills to the test by creating the proper mixture of gas and oil to power a Solex. Using only the provided tools, they had to figure out that they needed to pump 2 liters of gasoline to achieve the ratio of 25 parts gas to 1 part oil. If the mechanic approved their mixture, one of them would use that Solex to complete the Roadblock with the hope of making up for lost time.

TAKING A RIDE

As Gary & Mallory put their thinking caps on to solve the ratio of gas to oil, the five racers on their motorized bicycles slowly made their way along the roads of Liechtenstein. Clad in his goggles, Jet quipped, "I feel like Dumb and Dumber." On his smooth ride, Flight Time said, "This is crazy. It's cold out here."

However, what started out as a fun bicycle ride became a lot more complicated for the racers. A confused Jet stopped his Solex, saying, "I'm not real sure where I'm at. I think I missed a turn somewhere." As Jet turned around to retrace his steps, Jen kept cruising along, unaware that her map fell out of her pocket. When Jen reached for the map and realized it was gone, she said, "This is bad. This is real bad. I'm trying to keep a team within distance."

After powering his Solex with the 2 liters of gasoline at the Speed Bump, Gary began pedaling hard hoping to catch up. At the 10-kilometer mark, Gary ran into Jet who backtracked from the previous town and had 17-kilometers on his odometer. The pair decided to work together and continue biking as Gary joked, "This is like the Tour de France."

BUDDYING UP

Nearing the end point of the course, Justin stopped and tried to make sense of his map as Jen pulled up next to him. After Jen offered up her map reading skills to Justin if she could borrow his map, the two joined forces and figured out they needed to take one more right turn to reach Marco Buchel. Once they pulled up to the six-time Olympian, Justin first offered his guess of 22 kilometers to Marco and received the green light to continue on to Gutenberg Castle. After conferring with Justin, Jen also guessed 22 kilometers and followed Justin to the castle where both racers reunited with their teammates. Opening their next clue, the two teams discovered they had to take a bus and train to the ski resort town of Zermatt, Switzerland, located at the base of the famous Matterhorn. When they arrived, they had to search the train station for their next clue.

After parting ways with Gary who got trapped behind a slow bus in the middle of a town, Jet continued on by himself until he finally reached Marco Buchel. With plenty of wrong turns and mistakes included, Jet incorrectly guessed 35 kilometers, 13 more than the correct answer. Now having to return to the starting line, a frustrated Jet exclaimed, "You gotta be kidding me!" During his return trip, Jet ran into a confused Flight Time who had made a wrong turn and now hoped he was on the right path. Flight Time joked to Jet, "I might be right behind you."

HELPING OUT

However, as good fortune would have it, Flight Time's path to the end point took him directly past the bench where Kisha & Jen and Zev & Justin stood waiting to catch their bus to the train station. After telling the quartet he got lost, Flight Time hinted, "I don't wanna have to go back though. Come on. Don't make me go back." Justin and Jen decided to help their friend out and offered him the correct answer. Justin later said, "We felt like we were ahead of enough teams at that point that we didn't think that it would really hurt us." As the two teams boarded the bus, Jen added that she wouldn't have told anyone else the answer except for Flight Time.

Now armed with the answer, Flight Time continued riding on his path when he ran into Gary. Immediately, Flight Time told Gary the answer, adding, "I don't want you to have to go all the way back." After turning in their correct answers to Marco Buchel, Flight Time and Gary returned to their partners and hopped on the second train to Zermatt along with dating Goths Kent & Vyxsin. On the train, Kent joked, "I wanna put some cowboys on ice today." Getting the correct 22-kilometer reading on his second attempt, Jet reunited with Cord and the cowboys took the third train to Zermatt hoping to find a way to climb out of last place.

FONDUE FUN

Arriving in Zermatt, Switzerland, Kisha & Jen and Zev & Justin ran off the train and ripped open their clue to find a Detour having the choice of Cheese or Wheeze. In Cheese, teams had to make their way to a restaurant where they had to share a heaping pot of cheese fondue. Once they finished all their cheese, teams would be handed an empty pot with their next clue printed inside. In wheeze, teams traveled on foot all throughout Zermatt delivering a total of twenty pieces of luggage from the train station to at least five different hotels, collecting a tag for each delivery. When teams brought twenty correct tags to the train station the head porter would hand them their next clue.

Even though both teams failed to complete the eating Detour in the previous leg, Zev & Justin and Kisha & Jen walked into the restaurant ready to try an eating challenge once again. As soon as the large pot of cheese fondue was delivered to the table, Justin had doubts, telling Zev, "This is crazy." Zev told Justin to relax, insisting that they would be able to do it. The best friends decided to stick it out and keep eating the fondue while sisters Kisha & Jen instantly knew they were in over their heads and walked out to begin delivering luggage instead.

SAY CHEESE

As bellhops (clad in full uniforms, of course) Kisha & Jen methodically delivered luggage to the nearby hotels, Zev & Justin's progress eating fondue slowed to a crawl. The rich, heavy cheese and filling bread took its toll on Justin who doubled over in pain. Zev joked, "I'm not very fondue of this fondue." Finally, Justin reached the point where he couldn't take it anymore and announced, "I think I need to puke."

With the three teams on the second train arriving in Zermatt and choosing to deliver luggage, Zev & Justin still sat in the restaurant trying to finish their seemingly endless pot of fondue. In a role-reversal for the team, Zev stepped up to lead his team through the task, both by eating more than his fair share of the pot and by his encouragement for Justin to eat more. Eventually, the pair choked down the entire pot and received an empty pot with their next clue just as Kisha & Jen finished delivering their last piece of luggage. Both teams read their clue instructing them to proceed to the Double U-Turn at the fountain by Inderbinen Brunnen.

WINNING WAYS

With cowboys Jet & Cord arriving in Zermatt and also choosing to deliver luggage, Zev & Justin arrived on the Double U-Turn mat and decided not to use it on any team. Justin later said, "Since we were in the lead, we didn't need to use the U-Turn." Arriving at the U-Turn board in second place, Kisha & Jen felt similar to Zev & Justin and also didn't use the U-Turn on anyone. Both teams ripped open their clue instructing them to travel by electric taxi to the Pit Stop at Moos Restaurant.

Arriving at the Pit Stop in first place, best friends Zev & Justin won a trip for two from Travelocity to Curacao in the Caribbean. Celebrating their fourth first place victory, Justin said, "It just feels like each leg things are clicking in a different way. Keeping good spirits and staying positive."

SPEEDY DELIVERY

After Kisha & Jen finished the leg in second place, the four remaining teams continued to deliver luggage to the many hotels scattered throughout the small resort town knowing that the Double U-Turn still loomed large ahead of them. While bickering during each and every delivery, dating Goths Kent & Vyxsin managed to complete the task in third place and chose not to use the U-Turn. Father and daughter Gary & Mallory initially struggled to pick out luggage and balance them on the cart, the team finished in fourth place and also chose not to U-Turn anyone. On the way to the Pit Stop, Gary astutely noted, "Cowboys and Globetrotters and battling it out for last." Mallory added, "I hate to see either of them go."

FINAL SHOWDOWN

Although the Globetrotters had a sizable lead on the cowboys when Jet & Cord began delivering luggage, Flight Time & Big Easy made two mistakes that cost them valuable time. First, they misread two tags, forcing them to go to an additional hotel to deliver their last two bags. Then, when the Globetrotters returned to the train station, Flight Time realized he lost two of the tags, so he and Big Easy had to deliver two more bags to finish the task. The time wasted by the Globetrotters gave Jet & Cord, who ran through the streets efficiently delivering bags, the chance they needed to catch up.

With Jet & Cord delivering their last bags moments behind the Globetrotters, the two teams raced on foot for the Double U-Turn board knowing whoever lost would most likely be eliminated. In the end, Flight Time & Big Easy found Inderbinen Brunnen first and plastered Jet & Cord's picture on the Double U-Turn board. A regretful Flight Time said, "We don't want to do it, but it's either us or them." After stepping on the mat in fifth place, Big Easy said, "We had a terrible day today, but we're still racing."

ELIMINATED

When Jet & Cord saw their faces on the U-Turn board, an angry Jet said, "You two suckers. It doesn't say a lot about them, but maybe they thought they was U-Turning their strongest competition." Once the cowboys finished their pot of fondue, they arrived at the Pit Stop where Phil told them that they had been eliminated from the race. Cord said, "I know they hit the nail on the head when they call this race amazing. I get to go with my brother, my best friend, it's memories that I'll never forget." Jet added, "We went some new places this time and got to see it with my brother. Nobody else I'd rather be traveling around the country with…maybe my wife."
