The former Nickelodeon star and fellow former child actors have spoken out in defense of parents amid backlash over abuse targeting young stars in the entertainment industry.

AceShowbiz - Drake Bell, Giovonnie Samuels, and Bryan Hearne, former child stars who experienced firsthand the challenges of working in the entertainment industry, have come to the defense of parents whose children may have been mistreated on Nickelodeon.

During a panel discussion following a screening of the docuseries "Quiet on Set", Bell spoke on behalf of parents accused of negligence in protecting their kids. He argued that many parents were just as inexperienced as their children in the world of show business and were learning as they went.

Bell shared that his mother, who has been criticized for allowing him to spend time with alleged abuser Brian Peck, was balancing multiple responsibilities and was not equipped to handle the complexities of the industry.

Conversely, Bell's father, who was hailed as a hero in the docuseries, opposed Peck's involvement in Drake's life, but was ultimately sidelined by his son under Peck's influence.

Hearne and Samuels, former cast members of "All That", also expressed support for parents. They emphasized that young actors need experienced liaisons on set who can advocate for their well-being and provide guidance in navigating the entertainment landscape.

"Parents can only do so much," said Hearne. "There should be people on set who are tasked to care for the emotions of the children."

Samuels highlighted the need for an independent program between production, parents, and children that prioritizes their safety and support. She mentioned "Looking Ahead," a program managed by the Entertainment Community Fund, as an example of such an initiative.

The panel acknowledged that parents are not without responsibility, but they also emphasized the importance of industry professionals providing the necessary support and oversight to ensure the well-being of young performers.

"To say 'Oh, the parents should have stepped in with this and that' - no, there should be somebody who's experienced that can see, oh you know what, this child seems uncomfortable, I'm gonna be able to take him or her with their parent and bring them over here, 'Do you feel comfortable doing this?' " said Bell.

The former child actors emphasized the need for accountability and transparency in the entertainment industry to prevent future instances of exploitation and abuse.
