The 59-year-old late-night TV host chokes up as he's mourning the death of his dear friend Amy Cole, who worked for him as a personal and executive assistant for 16 years.

AceShowbiz - Stephen Colbert got emotional in the latest episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert". The late-night TV host choked up as he's mourning the death of one of his colleagues.

At the end of the Monday, April 1 episode of the talk show, Stephen could be seen looking somber as he delivered closing remarks for the episode. The 59-year-old then walked off screen before a black title card then appeared.

It read, "Dedicated to our dear friend Amy Cole, 1970-2024." Amy worked for Stephen as a personal and executive assistant for 16 years. She passed away on Sunday "after a brief illness," an obituary for the Texas native revealed.

"Working with Colbert for 16 years was more than a job to Amy," it continued. "It gave her a purpose and provided an opportunity to showcase herself as an incredible teammate to everyone involved. She was adored by her entire 'Late Show' work family, and she will be greatly missed."

Viewers, meanwhile, showed sympathy after watching the episode. "Life is always too short, my deepest sympathy," one said. Another added, "We were all confused over what was happening. He was hugging people, and then he came back to his desk. He asked us not to applaud and proceeded to his close. I am so sorry for his and the show's loss."

A third fan noted, "So sorry to hear this. Condolences to her family, work family, her friends and all who knew her."

The show's director and producer, Jake Plunkett, also took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to pay tribute to Amy. "Words cannot measure how big a loss Amy Cole is to this world," he wrote, "F**k cancer."

Meanwhile, Opus Moreschi, one of the writers and producers on the late-night talk show, described Amy as "a beacon of light and joy and calm in the swirling chaos of our workplace."

Both Jake and Opus asked their followers to donate to an organization called Radio Lollipop, where Amy worked for over two decades. According to its website, it "is an international children's charity providing care, comfort, play, and entertainment to sick children in hospital."
