The Universal and Blumhouse project goes ahead of industry expectations as it arrives at the top of the box office with record-breaking number $78 million at theaters in the United States and Canada in the October 27-29 weekend.

With the number, the horror flick becomes the third-biggest horror opening of all time following New Lines' "It" and "It Chapter Two". "Five Nights at Freddy's" is also the biggest horror opening of 2023 to date, edging out "Scream VI" ($44.4 million), and is named as the second-biggest opening of all time for a video-game adaptation following "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($146.3 million).

"This is more confirmation that moviegoers are looking for something new or, to be precise, getting the chance to see something they love already appear in a movie theater for the first time," Bruce Nash, founder of the Numbers, a box office tracking and analytics site, says.

While "Five Nights at Freddy's" comes up as an unexpected leader in the box office, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" drops to No. 2 after collecting $15 million in its third weekend, bringing its total to $150 million. "Killers of the Flower Moon", meanwhile, arrives at No. 3 with $9 million and a total of $40 million in its second week.

Occupying the fourth place of this weekend's box office is "After Death" after collecting $5.1 million in its debut week. Rounding out the Top 5 of the box office is "The Exorcist: Believer". The former leader flips to No. 5 $3.1 million in its fourth week.
