Ridley Scott to Direct 'Merlin Saga' Adaptation for Disney
Movie

The 'All the Money in the World' helmer is reportedly in talks with the studio to helm 'The Merlin Saga' with Philippa Boyens penning the script.

AceShowbiz - Disney's "The Merlin Saga" may be Ridley Scott's next movie after "All the Money in the World". According to a new report from Variety, the four-time Oscar-nominated director is currently in negotiations with the studio to helm the movie based on T.A. Barron's novel series.

If the deal is sealed, Scott will serve behind the lens with a script provided by Philippa Boyens ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy). The "Alien Covenant" director's production company Scott Free is also in negotiations to produce the upcoming big-screen adaptation of "The Merlin Saga", with Tendo Nagenda and Foster Driver overseeing the project.

"The Merlin Saga" follows a young Merlin as he goes on to become a mentor to King Arthur. It chronicles "the complete story of Merlin's life and times spanning 12 exciting novels. The saga includes 'The Lost Years of Merlin' epic (books 1 - 5) which chronicle the origins of the greatest of all wizards, 'Merlin's Dragon' trilogy (books 6 - 8) where you meet the powerful dragon in the universe - who is also Merlin's best friend, 'The Great Tree of Avalon' trilogy (books 9 - 11) which take place in Merlin's world a thousand years after the wizard's youth, and 'The Book of Magic', an illustrated companion volume that reveals the secrets of many characters and places in Merlin's worlds."

It's still unclear on which book the upcoming film adaptation will be based. The film is one of two movies Disney is currently developing based on the character, with the other one being a live-action remake of 1963's "Sword in the Stone". Scott has also met with Disney about this project.

There have been several movies focusing on the King Arthur legend, but the only high-profile project to focus specifically on the story of Merlin was NBC's miniseries "Merlin" which starred Sam Neill.
