The monster's terror, people's fright and the government's frantic effort to save them from destruction are teased in the official sneak peek.
The first official teaser trailer for "Godzilla" has been unearthed. It opens with David Strathairn giving a speech to a group of military members before they are dispatched in a desperate operation to stop the monstrous creature from destroying the city any further.
"Gentlemen, you are being sent in by a HALO jump," Strathairn says. "Now I realize not all of you have had hands on experience and frankly, none of us have ever faced a situation quite like this before. But I would not be asking any one of you to take this leap...if I did not have complete faith in your ability to succeed. Your courage will never be more needed than it is today."
The soldiers jump blindly into the city engulfed by thick smoke. Glimpses of the characters played by Aaron Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Ken Watanabe are shown as well. Near the end of the video, the giant monster is seen roaring in the middle of the indescribable ruins.
Described as an epic rebirth to Toho's iconic Godzilla, the film pits the world's most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity's scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it is scheduled to make its way out in theaters across the country on May 16, 2014.
