Andy Whitfield Approves His Replacement on 'Spartacus'

Liam McIntyre who appeared on HBO's 'The Pacific' has been picked to be Whitfield's successor because he has 'the gladiator credentials and the acting ability'.

The search for the new Spartacus has ended as executives landed their choice on Liam McIntyre. The Australian actor will replace Andy Whitfield as the titular character on Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" since the original star is not able to continue his commitment due to his Hodgkin's Lymphoma treatment.

Starz had been searching for the right actor to fit in Whitfield's shoes for months, inviting three relatively-unknown actors to do a screen test late last year and also reportedly considering a few more established names such as Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell. However, they were impressed by McIntyre whose lean figure was the execs' only doubt.

McIntyre has apparently bulked up and is due to begin his work soon this Spring in New Zealand. The much-delayed season 2 will be premiered in January 2012. In the meantime, a prequel called "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena" will fill in the gap, premiering on Friday, January 21 and ending after 6 episodes in February.

McIntyre had a small role on HBO's miniseries "The Pacific" and is known for his appearances in Australian TV series such as "Neighbours" and "Rush".

"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacus forward," Starz president and CEO Chris Albrecht said. "It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."

just finished watching the 1st season and find out the main actor is replaced, its ridiculous, imagine replacing jean luc picard, or sam beckett in quantum leap, its a slap in the face to a fan, just my opinion

Sad to hear that they will be recasting the role... I would have waited to see Andy play the role again. I mean he waited all that time to "see" his wife and she ends up dying in his arms... his battle with cancer totally embodies the struggles Spartacus had to face...

Excellent call on the part of STARZ. They have a winner with spartacus, and GOTA was a good idea, they should of made a full season. Whitfield would never recover with all the stress of returning. But geez another year for season 2.

Why dont they just replace Frasier in Frasier, Seinfeld, Tony Soprano, etc, etc... BOTTOM LINE - YOU CANNOT REPLACE THE MAIN CHARACTER WITH SOMEONE ELSE! Rediculous

The real problem with the producers is, THEY DIDN'T ASK THE FANS! The loyal viewers of the show WOULD WAIT. Andy's eventual return would have been incredible and worth the wait. The show would top the previous one.

Andy...our warmest thoughts are with you. We sincerely hope you beat this nasty disease. We are disappointed you will not be returning. But we do understand the show must go on. Our one true disappointment is Gods of the Arena is only 6 episodes! We would sure like to see the season last longer! Good luck to you and your family Andy!

Andy will truly be missed by all fans to the show, but please do not blame the producers for continuing the series. Andy quit the show to continue battling his cancer. Not the producers call, but his own. Andy became someone I really look up to after making that decision. His family needs him more than his fans do and I respect that. I am, and will always be a fan of Andy and this show.

As with all of the above, I too believe Andy Whitfield is, was and always will be the only Sparticus. I'm disappointed with the decision makers to move forward without Andy, he will beat this disease and will make his comeback, then what do you do? Anyone who watched Sparticus Season 1 will wait for Andy, he made and kept me watching week to week and I think he deserves their loyalty. What did you expect him to say or do, when faced with cancer and not knowing the outcome, and knowing what a true and respectable person Andy is, of coarse he doesn't want to hold up production. THEY still should of waited for HIM, WE WOULD! My prayers are with you and your family, Andy.

Andy, May you be made strong with all strength, with best wishes for a speedy recovery ~ I will not watch Spartacus without Andy. :(

The wisest thing to do would be to wait it out for Andy. We don't watch the show for the story regardless of the actors. We connect with the actors and follow the story. Huge executive mistake by someone clearly in-the-box and has lost touch with what is most important, keeping the connection with the audience out-of-the-box. All the best for speedy recovery Andy. Starz, do the right thing and reconsider.

I will not watch Spartacus with out Andy. They should have postponed it to see if Andy would get better again. I wish him and his family the best.

No offence to the rest of the cast but Andy is Spartacus. Can't even see how the show can continue without him. Whoever they ends up playing the part has massive shoes to fill.

I am really sad I thought Andy whitfield embodied the character of spartacus. I really don't think this new guy looks as hot as Andy was. I am wishing Andy a speedy recovery and I hope to see him in the future.

What a disappointment! Not happy about this recast, Aiden Turner would have been superb! Gonna be hard to watch w/o Whitfield.

I have no interest in watching the series since Andy was replaced. I have positive thoughts that he will beat this nasty disease and move onto greater endeavors.

I'm sorry they didn't choose someone good looking as a replacement, as Andy Whitfield was so gorgeous.
