Viggo Mortensen, the depicter of Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, has hinted that his character will not likely be seen in "The Hobbit". Though he has been reported being approached to reprise his role in the Guillermo del Toro's upcoming movie project, the actor recently told Coming Soon, "I think they're just worried about shooting the first part of that movie which doesn't involve my character."
However, Mortensen did not rule out possibility that Aragorn may appear in "The Hobbit 2", the second installment of the adventure movie. "My character is around at times - in the middle, but it would only be if they made a second movie or connecting movie that connected 'The Hobbit' to 'The Lord of the Rings' that I might appear, which would be great," he explained, admitting that he is interested to play the character again.
"The Hobbit" is an adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel with the same title. The movie is planned to be divided into two parts. The first film, which eyes for a 2010 release date, will revolve around a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins, who travels to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarfs to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. "The Hobbit 2", meanwhile, is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters in 2011.

Indeed there were talks for a long time about making a bridge movie between The Hobbit and LotR. If this had happened, Aragorn's appearance in the movie would have made perfect sense. There are plenty of events of his life hinted in the books that could have been shown. For example, the movie could include scenes of his time of serving Rohan and Gondor as Captain Thorongil. Or perhaps his wanderings with Gandalf. Or his hunt for Gollum. All of those events are not only an important part of Aragorn's life, but also quite essential for the history of Middle-earth in the T.A. In my opinion, they could have made a wonderful movie. I hope this answers the question what Strider would be doing. However, this discussion is pointless since PJ has already decided to give up the bridge movie idea and make The Hobbit into two movies instead, which, apparently, Viggo doesn't yet know.
There were talks about making the second movie into a sort of bridge between the Hobbit and the LotR, AS VIGGO SAID! So logically, Aragorn would be shown in various stages of life!
And what, exactly would Strider do--chuck rocks at the Necromancer? Aragorn is a 10 year-old boy at the time of THE HOBBIT.
