The guys each take over and hog something special that their respective ladies are trying to enjoy. Vance devours all of Amy's dessert, Rex steals Leigh's thunder while gossiping with the other women at the nail salon, and Dave crashes Julia's relaxing moment in the bathtub.

The gang hangs out at Rex and Leigh's place. Rex has just beaten Vance at basketball and Vance declares that he's determined to beat Rex at something. Julia asks Dave if he minds if she goes out with some work friends without him. Leigh accuses her of choosing to ask Dave in a "safe space" so that she can circumvent his legendary temper. Dave tells Julia to go ahead, he'll just watch episodes of "The Wire." When Julia laments making Dave watch alone, we see in flashbacks that Julia actually annoys Dave when he's trying to watch. Amy arrives and announces that she has quit her job at the pet store. She had a crisis of conscience that resulted in her freeing all the pets from their cages. Her "severance" is an adorable puppy. Vance instantly falls in love with "Little Vance."

Later that night, Julia stumbles home at two in the morning, waking up groggy. She can't stop laughing at the memory of the fun she had drinking at different bars and watching her gay friends from work, Robert and Terry, sing karaoke. The next day, Rex beats Vance once again, this time at a video game. Dave complains that Julia's invited her new friends over and has asked that he make himself scarce. He's irked, noting how Rex and Leigh don't seem to have such boundary issues. Rex proceeds to beat Vance at another game. Vance becomes even more determined that he's going to beat Rex at something. Rex uncovers a tiny pool table for their next competition: Game on. But Rex beats Vance at tiny pool, as Dave watches. Vance simply won't give up.

The girls hang out at a cafe. Julia confesses that she's excited to have her own gay friends and do something separate from Dave, something that's just for her. Amy gets it, and shares that she started "jogging" for the same reason - in reality, she just runs around the corner and sits on the curb reading a magazine for an hour. Julia gets a text from one of her new friends and leaves. Leigh focuses on helping Amy find a job. Amy 's current ambition is to work in an office, a la "Working Girl." Leigh declares that Amy needs "a wife," someone supporting, pushing, making things happen the way she does for Rex. Leigh offers to be Amy's "wife."

The next day, Leigh and Vance send Amy off to her first day at a new job that Leigh found for her. After Amy leaves, Leigh rubs it in Vance's face that Rex kicked his ass at tiny pool. That night, Dave tries to watch "The Wire" in the bedroom while Julia entertains her new friends Robert and Terry in the living room. They keep getting louder and Dave keeps turning up the volume on his computer. Finally, it's too much for Dave and he pops his head into the living room to "check" to see if his volume is too high. Julia brushes him off and Dave leaves, only to return after hearing a request for margaritas.

Rex and Vance continue their epic competition of tiny pool. Rex has now beaten Vance 62 times in a row. Vance is one shot away from victory, so Rex tries to psyche him out. Vance rises to the challenge and sinks the last shot, beating Rex for the first time. Rex wants to play again, but Vance declines - he's retiring as a champion. At Dave and Julia's, Julia is annoyed that Dave's exotic margaritas are a hit with Robert and Terry. Terry spills his on an upholstered seat cushion, which Dave then reupholsters in the shed while everyone watches. Dave then imitates Julia with a nagging voice and Robert and Terry follow suit. Robert and Terry leave even though they haven't watched "Real Housewives" with Julia yet. Dave is oblivious, thrilled at what great guys Robert and Terry are - while Julia seethes. Dave has stolen her thunder again.

The next day, Amy brings Vance to her office after lunch. Amy introduces him to her secretary, Holly, who tells her that Leigh is waiting in her office. As Vance leaves, he gets a call from a frazzled Rex. Rex declares that he must have a rematch, but Vance continues to insist that he's retired. Amy enters her office to find Leigh decorating it with baseball memorabilia. Leigh did some digging and discovered that Amy's new boss, Mr. Reiger, is a huge Padres fan. Amy is excited to be working for the largest garage door manufacturer on the West Coast. They even do business in Quebec so Amy's French might come in handy! Leigh tells Amy that she ran into Mr. Reiger earlier and volunteered Amy to share her new ideas with him - the pressure is on.

At Dave and Julia's, Vance tries to get new puppy Little Vance to interact with Luke, but is having no success. Just then, the phone rings and Dave answers a call from Robert. Julia walks in as Dave is finishing the call. He's just made plans to go out with Robert and Terry. Dave realizes that Julia might want to come along and offers to check and make sure that Terry and Robert are on board with including her. Vance follows Julia to her car. He gets in and tells Julia that he knows she's not okay with how Dave just made plans with her friends.

Meanwhile, Amy is stressing out in her office, trying to come up with ideas. She's at the end of her rope when she gets what seems to be an encouraging video message from Leigh. As it turns out, the message is intended to be shared with Rex and as Leigh finishes her message, she starts unbuttoning her blouse and tells Amy it's time for her to hit stop… In Julia's car, Vance dispenses some advice. Vance explains that Dave is a social dominator who's been known to steal friends. Vance shares the story of how he and Dave came to be friends at summer camp - Dave stole Vance from his then best friend, Ted. Vance counsels Julia that it's important to have relationships separate from Dave. Suddenly, Vance realizes that he's left Little Vance with Dave and runs back to retrieve him.

The next day, Amy hides out in a mostly empty movie theater 10 minutes before her big meeting. She sees Rex a few rows back. Amy confesses that she couldn't handle the fast track and told them she was sick at work. Rex understands - he's supposed to be at a violin lesson. He tells Amy to come home with him and he can fix it. Later that night, Julia goes clubbing with Robert and Terry. They're bummed that Dave couldn't make it. Julia ignores them when they ask why Dave canceled. Dave is at Vance and Amy's watching "The Wire" with Vance (who is annoying him). Terry calls Dave, tells him to rally and join them. While Dave is on the phone, Rex shows up with the tiny pool table, only to be denied again by Vance. Dave hangs up and declares that he's going to the club to find out what's going on. Vance tells Dave not to go, to let Julia be the star for once. Angry, Dave leaves.

At the club, Dave spots Julia and approaches with a head of steam. Then he notices that she's having a blast with Terry and Robert, enjoying the spotlight. Dave decides to let her have this moment without him and turns to leave when he bumps into a guy he knows, Steve. It's a gay club and Steve is married with kids. Steve covers by saying he thought there's a yogurt place nearby, but this isn't it, so he'll just be going. At Rex and Leigh's place, Amy and Rex greet Leigh as she returns home. Leigh wants to know how Amy's meeting went, but Rex distracts her by telling her he's falling apart because she's been spending so much supporting Amy. Amy says it's okay and that she's in a good place. Rex asks Amy to leave - he wants Leigh's attention (and he's not kidding).

Later that night, Julia returns home late to a sleeping Dave. She confesses that she was out with Robert and Terry and asks if Dave is mad. Dave asks her if she had fun. She did, so Dave is happy. But Julia missed Dave and when she went to call him, she dropped her phone in the toilet. She closes her eyes to go sleep, then after a moment, asks Dave if Steve is gay. Meanwhile at the man cave, Rex has Little Vance on his lap and calls Vance for a rematch. Rex threatens to feed Little Vance non-organic generic dog food, which finally gets Vance to accept his challenge. In the corner, Leigh thanks Rex for inviting her.
