AceShowbiz - Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement have started writing a sequel to their cult hit film What We Do in the Shadows titled We’re Wolves. The new project will center on a pack of werewolves led by Rhys Darby’s character Anton, shifting the focus from vampires to lycanthropes.
The sequel had been stuck in development limbo for years, mostly confined to discussions, but writing has recently commenced. Clement confirmed that We’re Wolves will be a feature film rather than an extension of the What We Do in the Shadows TV series, which concluded its final season on FX in 2024. The original 2014 film was known for its improvised dialogue, while the TV series adopted a mostly scripted approach with some improvisation. Waititi and Clement are currently deciding whether the sequel will follow the film’s improvisational style or the TV show’s scripted format. They’ve been collaborating remotely via Zoom when apart but find it helpful to be in the same country to complete the script. Clement estimates the screenplay may not be finished until 2027.
Taika Waititi is celebrated as the co-director and star of What We Do in the Shadows, a horror comedy that helped establish his distinct filmmaking voice. He also garnered critical acclaim and multiple award nominations for his adaptation work on Jojo Rabbit (2019). Known for blending humor with genre storytelling, Waititi’s involvement promises a unique take on the lycanthrope mythology in this follow-up.
The move to spotlight Rhys Darby’s werewolf character signals a fresh narrative direction within the established universe, expanding beyond the vampire-centric original. As fans await the next chapter, the project’s gradual progress underlines the creators’ commitment to crafting a thoughtful and entertaining sequel rather than rushing to capitalize on the franchise’s popularity.
