AceShowbiz - The Scrubs revival offers a subtle tribute to the iconic character Dr. Bob Kelso, played by Ken Jenkins, even though Jenkins himself does not appear in Season 1. Fans watching the opening episode may have noticed a plaque for "The Robert Kelso Wing" placed where Kelso's favorite hangout, Coffee Bucks, once stood. This gesture acknowledges Kelso's lasting presence at Sacred Heart Hospital without implying that the character has left the story entirely.
In the original series, Kelso stepped down as chief of medicine in Season 7 to avoid being forced out due to his age. During Season 8, the character was often seen collecting free muffins, a humorous nod to his lighter side. The series finale revealed Kelso returning to part-time work as a family practice locum tenens, which required traveling alongside his wife Enid, who was frequently referenced but never shown. Although Season 9 later revealed that Enid had passed away, and that Bob returned to teach part time at Winston University, that season remains unofficial in the eyes of many fans.
Despite the revival reuniting much of the original cast, Ken Jenkins is notably absent from the first season. Series regulars such as Zach Braff (J.D.), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), and Donald Faison (Turk) return, while Judy Reyes (Carla) and John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) make recurring appearances. Additionally, Neil Flynn reprises his role as The Janitor in a single episode, and Christa Miller returns briefly as Jordan. The season also honors the late Sam Lloyd, who played Ted, by naming the new bar where the characters gather “Lloyd’s Tavern.”
Before the final two episodes of the nine-episode order were completed, Zach Braff revealed in an interview with Esquire that it was uncertain whether Jenkins or Flynn would appear in Season 1. Braff explained that both actors were interested but that the challenge was whether the show had the capacity to develop storylines worthy of their characters. Showrunner Aseem Batra later told TVLine that initial talks about bringing Jenkins back were complicated by the filming location being Vancouver instead of Los Angeles. Nevertheless, Batra expressed the creative team’s desire to eventually include all legacy cast members for at least a few episodes.
Series creator Bill Lawrence also shared hopes for Ken Jenkins to join the revival, acknowledging Jenkins’ advanced age but emphasizing the affection everyone involved has for him. For now, the dedication of a wing at Sacred Heart Hospital serves as a heartfelt nod to Kelso’s legacy, signaling that the character’s story remains open rather than concluded.
