A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shifts focus to a lowborn hero, with Targaryens & Lannisters present—but House Stark is notably absent.

AceShowbiz - A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms offers a fresh perspective within the Game of Thrones universe by focusing on a different kind of hero. Unlike the main series, which centers on Westeros’ noble families, this show follows Dunk, an orphan from the impoverished Flea Bottom district. Despite this shift, many prominent houses from the original saga, including the Targaryens, Baratheons, Lannisters, Tyrells, and Tullys, still play important roles throughout the story.
One of the most notable omissions in the early seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is House Stark, the iconic family from the North. Their absence is largely explained by geography and culture. Winterfell, home to the Starks, lies far north of the Reach, where the Ashford tourney takes place, making travel there impractical for a knightly event. Moreover, the North tends to follow the Old Gods rather than the Faith of the Seven, meaning knights are less common in that region. Within this context, it is understandable why the Starks have not yet been central to the story. However, the narrative promises that Dunk and Egg will eventually cross paths with the Stark family.
House Stark’s introduction is anticipated in a later season, specifically Season 4 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. George R.R. Martin, the original author behind these tales, has written three novellas so far but envisions a total of twelve in the Dunk and Egg series. Among the unpublished stories, one titled The She-Wolves of Winterfell was once considered the fourth installment. While another story called The Village Hero might be released first, The She-Wolves of Winterfell aligns perfectly with the idea of Season 4's storyline if HBO pursues that far.
The title The She-Wolves of Winterfell refers to a group of formidable Northern women, including Lady Lorra Royce, married to Lord Beron Stark of Winterfell, along with widows of previous Stark lords. This storyline is hinted at in the third Dunk and Egg novella, The Mystery Knight, where Dunk mentions plans to travel north to serve Beron Stark. Beron is preparing for conflict against Dagon Greyjoy, a battle that would bring the Starks and Lannisters together in alliance.
However, it seems more likely that Dunk and Egg's arrival at Winterfell will occur after the battle rather than during it. Martin revealed plans as early as 2006 for a story involving Beron Stark, who suffers mortal wounds fighting the Greyjoys. This sets the stage for a succession crisis at Winterfell, a situation that Dunk and Egg would become entangled in. Such a plot would emphasize the strength of Northern women, consistent with the “She-Wolves” title, and better suit the tone of the Dunk and Egg tales than a large-scale war retelling.
Interestingly, this potential season could also introduce a familiar character from the original Game of Thrones series: Old Nan. She is nearly 100 years old during Season 1 of Game of Thrones and would have been alive during the timeframe of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. In addition, Bran Stark’s vision in A Dance with Dragons shows a tall knight kissing a young woman at Winterfell, widely speculated to be Dunk and a younger version of Old Nan. Some fan theories even suggest that Hodor might be a descendant of Dunk. Season 4 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms could potentially confirm or refute these intriguing possibilities.
While House Stark has been the moral center and emotional core of the original Game of Thrones saga, they have been relatively sidelined in the expanding franchise. Their brief appearances in House of the Dragon hint at their ongoing importance, but their storyline in that series focuses more on the Dance of the Dragons than on the Starks themselves. Similarly, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms mainly focuses on other regions and families, with the Starks playing only a supporting role for the time being.
HBO’s Game of Thrones universe continues to grow with several spinoffs in development, though few center on House Stark. Upcoming projects include a film about Aegon’s Conquest focusing on the Targaryens, a series about Corlys Velaryon titled The Sea Snake, and 10,000 Ships, which follows Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar. Despite this, the Starks have not been forgotten entirely. HBO has explored a potential Jon Snow spinoff, which may be revisited, and is also considering a series featuring Arya Stark’s adventures beyond Westeros. If these series come to fruition, House Stark will return prominently to the franchise.
Fans of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms can look forward to Season 2, scheduled for release on HBO and HBO Max in 2027. Meanwhile, all six episodes of Season 1 are currently available for streaming on HBO Max, allowing viewers to catch up on Dunk and Egg’s journey so far.
In summary, while House Stark has been largely absent from the initial seasons of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, their story is poised to take center stage in a future season. The combination of Martin’s unpublished Dunk and Egg novellas and the lore surrounding the North’s most famous family promises new layers of intrigue and character development in this celebrated Game of Thrones spinoff.
