During an appearance on The View, she described the pitching process as "really weird," especially since she co-created the show alongside Dan Murphy and Joe Wengert, her ex-boyfriend. The pair collaborated to develop the series, which was inspired by their shared experience with their rescue cat.

Aubrey Plaza explained that she and Wengert once lived in Queens, the same setting as Kevin. They had two cats named Kevin and Howard, who were adopted from what Plaza described as "like a mob family." This quirky detail adds an authentic and unconventional layer to the show’s backstory.
