AceShowbiz - Netflix continues to expand its impressive roster of animated films with a fresh, darker adaptation of the classic story Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. The streaming giant has commissioned an upcoming animated movie titled Charlie Vs. The Chocolate Factory, slated for release in 2027. This new project reimagines the beloved Roald Dahl universe by taking a more mature and shadowy approach, while still leveraging the imaginative appeal of animation.
Over recent years, Netflix has achieved substantial success with its animated offerings, including hits like KPop Demon Hunters, Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio, The Mitchells Vs. The Machines, and Nimona. This new film aims to build on that momentum by delivering a unique follow-up to a story that has already seen multiple screen adaptations.
The narrative of Charlie Vs. The Chocolate Factory is set years after the original tale. It centers on the infamous chocolatier Willy Wonka, who is now facing consequences for his past actions. According to Netflix’s official synopsis, Willy Wonka (voiced by Taika Waititi) has spent time behind bars for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry during the original factory tour. Following his release, Wonka is determined to reopen his factory and “add a little sweetness to a bitter world.” However, his plans are challenged by a new generation of children, including teenager Charlie Paley, played by actor Kit Connor.
These new “rotten” kids face eviction and plan a daring break-in to the factory to steal a priceless Wonka Bar in an effort to save their homes. But as with all those who have entered Wonka’s fantastical factory before, they quickly discover that things are not as simple as they seem, and they encounter challenges that are far more complex and dangerous.
The film will be directed by Jared Stern, known for his work on The LEGO Batman Movie, alongside Elaine Bogan, who has contributed to Netflix's Trollhunters. Both directors bring a vision that balances respect for the legacy of the original story while injecting fresh and darker thematic elements into this animated sequel.
In a press release, Kit Connor, the voice behind Charlie Paley, expressed his enthusiasm about joining the project. He shared, “I'm so excited to enter the wonderful world of Wonka. I was immediately caught by the early concept art and the directors' vision for the film - capturing the spirit and heart that made the original story so special, whilst imbuing it with something so fresh and unique.” Connor further described the film as a fun and surprising new adventure that will resonate with audiences worldwide.
Taika Waititi, who voices Willy Wonka, also commented on his involvement, saying, “Our directors, Jared and Elaine, have a bold vision befitting this new adventure whilst remaining sympathetic to the legacy, and I'm thrilled to play my part in bringing Willy Wonka to life in animated form. He is so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic, eccentric candy genius, if a little mischievous at times, is hugely exciting.” Waititi’s participation adds further star power to the project, reinforcing Netflix’s commitment to high-caliber talent in its animated productions. Notably, Waititi is also involved in other major upcoming projects, including a role in The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.
While Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is perhaps best remembered for the 1971 film Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, this new Netflix film is part of a long tradition of adaptations centered on the mysterious chocolatier and the children who enter his factory. The story also saw a recent reinterpretation in the 2023 film Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka exploring his origins before opening the factory.
However, Netflix’s Charlie Vs. The Chocolate Factory stands apart by serving as a darker, animated sequel that explores the consequences of the original factory tour and introduces a new generation of characters grappling with their own struggles and ambitions.
As anticipation builds, fans of the franchise and animation enthusiasts alike will be watching closely to see how Netflix’s creative team reinvents such an iconic story with a fresh, edgier tone. The combination of a darker narrative, animation, and high-profile voice talent sets this film apart as one of the most intriguing upcoming projects in Netflix’s animation slate.
