AceShowbiz - The Copenhagen Test has been canceled by Peacock after airing just one season, Variety reports. The espionage thriller, which premiered all eight episodes in late December 2025, will not return for a second season despite receiving generally positive reviews from critics.
The series starred Simu Liu, well known for his work in the Marvel universe, as Alexander Hale, a first-generation Chinese-American intelligence analyst. The character discovers that his brain has been hacked, allowing unknown perpetrators to access everything he perceives. Caught between a shadowy agency and the hackers, Alexander must continuously maintain a performance to uncover the truth and prove his loyalties.
Alongside Liu, the cast included Melissa Barrera, Sinclair Daniel, Brian D'Arcy James, Mark O'Brien, and Kathleen Chalfant. The show combined elements of action, mystery, science fiction, and thriller genres, earning a TV-MA rating for its mature content.
Despite critical approval, The Copenhagen Test struggled to sustain audience interest. It holds a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, signaling generally favorable reviews. However, Nielsen data cited by Variety shows that the show’s viewership declined sharply after its initial release week. During the week of December 29, 2025, to January 4, 2026, it amassed 373 million minutes viewed, ranking tenth on Nielsen's top 10 streaming originals chart. Unfortunately, it failed to secure a spot in the top 10 in the following weeks.
The series was created by Thomas Brandon, who also served as writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner. Simu Liu was not only the lead actor but also an executive producer. Jennifer Yale shared writing, executive producing, and co-showrunning duties. Additional executive producers included James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett through Atomic Monster, alongside Mark Winemaker and Jet Wilkinson.
Directorial responsibilities were divided among Jet Wilkinson, who directed the first two episodes, with Nima Nourizadeh and Kevin Tancharoen helming the remaining episodes. The show premiered on Peacock on December 27, 2025, and was promoted as a high-stakes thriller exploring espionage and surveillance themes.
Despite its cancellation, The Copenhagen Test attempted to carve a niche in the competitive streaming landscape, blending fast-paced storytelling and complex character dilemmas. The decision to cancel the show after one season underscores the challenges even critically praised series face in maintaining viewer engagement over time.
