AceShowbiz - During Warner Bros.' CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, The Great Beyond was showcased for the first time by acclaimed filmmaker J.J. Abrams. This marks Abrams' return to directing since his 2019 film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The highly anticipated film, which features a notable ensemble cast including Glen Powell, Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson, is scheduled for theatrical release on November 13.
The storyline of The Great Beyond remains largely under wraps, with the newly released trailer offering only subtle hints. It begins with a quote from H.G. Wells and captures tentative interactions between Powell and Ortega’s characters. The trailer’s imagery includes flickering lights, a mysterious glowing substance, and an opening in the ground, culminating in a tense scene of Powell’s character on the run.
"People like us, I think we're looking for something - something pure, something we can't find here," says Ortega’s character in the trailer, suggesting themes of searching and discovery. Despite the limited information, the visuals and atmosphere evoke a sense of mystery and intrigue that aligns with Abrams’ desire to tell an original, expansive story.
From the stage at CinemaCon, J.J. Abrams explained his motivation for directing this project, emphasizing a return to original storytelling. He expressed a wish to create a film that appeals across generations and reignites the sense of wonder and possibility experienced in childhood. Abrams also praised his cast, joking that he cast Powell as the lead because he wanted audiences to think, "Maybe he peaked in high school."
The debut of The Great Beyond coincides with a transitional period for Abrams’ production company, Bad Robot. Recently, Bad Robot announced plans to downsize and reorganize, closing its Los Angeles office and relocating to New York, where Abrams now lives. Founded in 1999, Bad Robot has been responsible for numerous television and film hits, including Alias, Lost, Fringe, Person of Interest, Westworld, as well as blockbuster films like Abrams’ own Star Wars trilogy, multiple Mission: Impossible installments, and the 2009 Star Trek reboot.
CinemaCon itself is a key annual event that gathers cinema owners and Hollywood studios, organized by Cinema United (formerly the National Association of Theatre Owners). This year’s event took place from April 13 to 16 in Las Vegas, offering a platform for studios like Warner Bros. to present upcoming projects such as The Great Beyond.
With The Great Beyond set to hit theaters this November, audiences can expect a visually captivating and thought-provoking film that blends mystery with themes of connection and rediscovery. As Abrams returns to the director’s chair, this project promises to be an ambitious and original addition to his filmmaking repertoire.
