AceShowbiz - Bridgerton surprised fans by changing Francesca Bridgerton’s romantic storyline from the original books by introducing a gender-swapped love interest, shifting her future partner from Michael to Michaela. This creative choice has sparked significant discussion among viewers and the show’s creators alike.
Season 3 of Bridgerton expanded Francesca Bridgerton’s role dramatically. After recasting the character with Hannah Dodd, audiences watched Francesca develop a relationship with John, played by Victor Alli. Their story culminated in marriage and plans to relocate to Scotland. However, the season finale revealed a twist: Francesca’s love interest evolved to include John’s cousin Michaela, portrayed by Masali Baduza, a character whose gender was switched from the original male character Michael in Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked.
This shift was highlighted in a memorable scene where Lady Whistledown, voiced by Julie Andrews, commented on Francesca’s sudden speechlessness upon meeting Michaela.
Fans familiar with the books know that Francesca and John’s marriage lasts only two years before his untimely death. Afterward, Francesca’s romantic path leads her to John’s cousin, who confesses their feelings for her. Showrunner Jess Brownell has confirmed that this gender swap was intentional to increase LGBTQIA+ visibility, a topic previously underexplored in the series.
In a June 2024 interview with Variety, Brownell explained that the team wanted to focus on stories of queer joy rather than trauma. “This is a show about happily-ever-afters,” she said, emphasizing the desire to portray positive queer relationships within the constraints of the Regency era setting. Brownell also mentioned extensive research was conducted to authentically represent such stories in the show’s historical context.
Brownell teased that Masali Baduza will play a larger role in the upcoming season, hinting at an ongoing relationship between Michaela and Francesca that aligns with the books but with some creative liberties. She told Entertainment Weekly, “You’re going to see more of Michaela next season. I can’t say in what capacity, just not to tip my hand, but there is going to be a relationship between Michaela and Fran, as per the books.”
The decision to introduce a same-sex couple was deeply personal for Brownell. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she shared how Francesca’s story resonated with her own queer experience. Brownell explained that the character’s feelings of being different from family and society mirrored many queer individuals’ journeys. She stressed the importance of not including queer characters just for representation’s sake but to tell authentic stories about the queer experience.
Brownell also assured fans that the adaptation would follow the source material closely, with only minor necessary changes. She emphasized the importance of showcasing historical examples of women like Francesca who found happiness despite societal challenges, ensuring the story centers on queer joy and hopeful outcomes.
Showrunner Brownell revealed that since Francesca was a minor presence in earlier seasons, the writers had freedom to develop her character more fully in season 3. She explained to Variety that this allowed the series to plant early hints of the character’s future romantic developments right from the first episode of season 3, carefully setting the stage for the season finale’s reveal.
Regarding the timeline of Francesca and Michaela’s relationship, Brownell shared that there will be a time jump at some point. Importantly, the show intends to honor Francesca’s genuine connection with John, which many fans have embraced. Brownell expressed that their relationship exemplified companionship, respect, friendship, trust, and shared interests—all valuable forms of love that do not diminish the passion seen in other relationships on the show.
She added that the narrative will allow Francesca time to mourn John before fully exploring her romance with Michaela. This approach respects the emotional depth and complexity of Francesca’s journey, ensuring both relationships are portrayed with care and authenticity.
