AceShowbiz - Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse unveiled fresh scenes at CinemaCon, where Sony Pictures Animation offered a glimpse of the highly anticipated conclusion to their animated trilogy.
During Monday night’s event, writer-producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller were joined onstage by directors Justin K. Thompson and Bob Persichetti. Miller described the upcoming installment as “the most emotional Spider-Verse film we have ever made,” while Lord labeled it the “most spectacular.” They confirmed that the story directly continues from where the previous film, Across the Spider-Verse, left off, following main character Miles Morales trapped in an alternate dimension.
The new footage opens with Miles, voiced by Shameik Moore, bound and trying to negotiate his release. Suddenly, another version of Miles Morales appears, who identifies himself as “The Prowler.” Both characters are confused by the multiverse's reality and humorously argue over their different pronunciations of “Morales” with what degree of accent and their contrasting fashion choices.
As the two versions of Miles clash, the original warns that he doesn’t wish to harm his captors. The tension breaks when a sudden electric surge courses through his hands, enabling him to break free.
Sony also showcased a supercut featuring various animation styles throughout the film. The montage displays Miles engaged in battles both internal and external, supported by familiar side characters from previous films in the series.
Beyond the Spider-Verse picks up directly after the cliffhanger ending of Across the Spider-Verse, which earned over $690 million at the box office in 2023. The franchise began with 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, an Oscar-winning film that redefined animation with its innovative style and narrative approach.
Alongside Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld returns as Spider-Gwen. The screenplay is crafted by Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and David Callaham.
While Lord and Miller recently celebrated success with the Amazon MGM Studios project Project Hail Mary, they remain focused on completing Beyond the Spider-Verse, which is scheduled for release on June 18, 2027.
Executives at Sony Pictures Animation, including Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville, expressed strong confidence in the film's animation quality. De Froberville remarked on how the new artwork and designs surpassed expectations, stating, “I was like, ‘How are they going to top [2023’s] Across the Spider-Verse?’ And then we’re looking at art and design [for 2027’s Beyond the Spider-Verse], and it’s really blowing my mind.”
