This project features four freestyles laid over classic DJ Clue tape instrumentals, including beats from Diddy’s "Victory," Black Rob’s "Can I Live," Biggie’s "Who Shot Ya?," and The LOX’s "Money, Power, Respect."

The EP received praise from the hip-hop community with Jay-Z mentioning it during a recent GQ interview. Additionally, Travis Scott expressed his admiration when they met at FanaticsFest, telling DJ Clue, “Yo, that Cole s-t was hard.” Aside from these collaborations, DJ Clue has also produced tracks for artists like Lil Wayne, Sleepy Hollow, and DaBaby, and hinted at upcoming projects without revealing specifics.

DJ Clue recently visited Billboard’s New York City office to discuss his recent work, the connection between underground and mainstream hip-hop, and how his career has evolved over the years.

When asked if artists had approached him prior to the J. Cole and Clipse projects, DJ Clue explained that he often gets involved in sample clearance and collaborations. He recalled how Clipse’s Stephen Victor reached out to share music Pharrell Williams wanted to work on, leading to their collaboration. He and J. Cole had also talked about doing a freestyle over one of his old beats from The Professional album before eventually connecting to create the mixtape.

The process of assembling the Birthday Blizzard '26 tape involved J. Cole sending freestyles over classic instrumentals, with DJ Clue revisiting old DAT tapes to recreate the authentic sound and vibe of his earlier work. The idea for the tape's title was inspired by a previous mixtape DJ Clue had done called Birthday Blizzard '96. Despite some weather-related delays, the project came together quickly, with J. Cole knocking out the freestyles and sending them to DJ Clue to finalize.

On the authenticity of his vocals used in the Clipse record, DJ Clue clarified that Pharrell Williams sampled his voice and placed it where it fit best in the songs, but DJ Clue was not physically present in the studio during the sessions — all coordination happened via email.

The artwork for the J. Cole tape was done by an artist named p:type, who had contributed to some of DJ Clue’s previous mixtapes. The design aimed to evoke the feel of classic street mixtape covers, making it look like something you could find on a street corner or in a barbershop.

Discussing the beats chosen for the tape, DJ Clue noted that these instrumentals were highly sought after when they first dropped, making them a perfect backdrop for J. Cole’s freestyles. He also shared memories of J. Cole hanging out with him and Skane Dolla in Queens before fame, playing basketball and coming through to vibe while developing his craft. J. Cole even walked DJ Clue’s daughter into her Sweet 16, highlighting their longstanding personal connection.

Regarding Clipse and their request to have him on the track "Inglorious Bastards," DJ Clue expressed appreciation for being included. He noted that many artists have reached out to him over the years because his era of mixtapes and energy is viewed as nostalgic and influential, with some feeling that the dynamic he brought is missing from today’s music scene. He mentioned potential collaborations that almost happened with artists like A$AP Ferg and A$AP Rocky, reflecting his ongoing relevance in the hip-hop community.

DJ Clue also weighed in on the interplay between underground and mainstream hip-hop, affirming that underground culture has always influenced the mainstream. He pointed to examples like Tyler, the Creator’s Call Me If You Get Lost with DJ Drama and Playboi Carti’s albums hosted by Swamp Izzo as proof of this dynamic. He believes that artists who started underground now want to reconnect with the raw, authentic feeling from their early days as fans or up-and-coming rappers.

He criticized much of today’s music as being "microwaved," where artists may produce a hit but fail to build a consistent foundation, often fading away quickly. DJ Clue emphasized the importance of groundwork and creating lasting impact in an era where technology allows for rapid releases but potentially less longevity.

On the subject of albums hosted by DJs, DJ Clue applauded the approach taken by Tyler, the Creator and Playboi Carti, calling it a “dope touch” even if he might not have done it exactly the same way. He reminisced about his own early days producing sample tapes that previewed albums for artists like T.I. and Usher, highlighting the evolution of DJ involvement in album promotion.

When reflecting on how he might have approached his career if starting out today, DJ Clue confidently stated he would have dominated the game, especially with today’s technology. He pointed out that modern tools make it easier to produce and distribute music quickly, for example through platforms like SoundCloud, which did not exist during his early days.
