AceShowbiz - Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli is set to headline a major free concert at Mexico City's famed Zócalo on April 18, joining a distinguished list of international artists to perform at this historic venue.
On this special evening, Bocelli will be accompanied by the renowned Mexican cumbia group Los Ángeles Azules along with singer and songwriter Ximena Sariñana, according to an announcement from Banco Plata, the event's organizer in collaboration with the Mexico City government.
Banco Plata expressed excitement about the unique collaboration, stating on social media, "Can you imagine that fusion? Neither can we, but we can't wait to hear how it sounds." This concert promises to blend the world of opera with cumbia and contemporary Mexican music in an unprecedented cultural event.
Bocelli will perform selections from his landmark 1997 album Romanza, commemorating its 30th anniversary with this special appearance at the Plaza de la Constitución, the official name of the Zócalo.
Clara Brugada, the head of government for Mexico City, shared her enthusiasm for the concert, describing it as "a magical evening that reaffirms Mexico City as the cultural capital of the world."
The Zócalo holds deep cultural and historical significance as a public square where politics, social movements, religion, and culture converge. It is the second-largest public square globally, surpassed only by Tiananmen Square in Beijing, making it a prestigious location for such a significant musical event.
Historically, the Zócalo has hosted many notable performances. One of its earliest documented concerts was by the Mexican norteño band Los Tigres del Norte in 1999, which lasted nearly three hours. Since then, legendary artists such as Paul McCartney, Roger Waters, Justin Bieber, Shakira, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, and Grupo Firme have also delighted thousands of attendees at this landmark venue.
Recently, on March 1, Colombian superstar Shakira set a new attendance record at the Zócalo, drawing 400,000 people to her free concert—the largest crowd ever recorded there. Before her, the Argentine band Los Fabulosos Cadillacs attracted 300,000 attendees on June 3, 2023, and Mexican regional group Grupo Firme brought in 280,000 fans a year earlier.
This upcoming event featuring Bocelli, Los Ángeles Azules, and Ximena Sariñana is anticipated to be a landmark cultural moment, combining diverse musical styles at one of the world’s most iconic public squares, accessible to all free of charge.
