AceShowbiz - The upcoming horror film Backrooms, set for release on May 29, 2026, is already creating a buzz among fans of the genre. Distributed by A24, this movie taps into a unique blend of sci-fi and found-footage style to deliver a suspenseful experience that traces its origins to an internet phenomenon.
The concept of the Backrooms stems from a 2019 post on 4chan, where a user described a haunting alternate reality filled with endless, fluorescent-lit yellow rooms. According to the original post, if someone accidentally “noclips” out of reality, they might find themselves trapped in this eerie liminal space. It’s depicted as an endless maze of empty rooms with the unsettling hum of fluorescent lights, the smell of old carpet, and the terrifying possibility of unseen entities lurking nearby.
This unsettling idea inspired the premise of the film. Backrooms follows a therapist on a desperate mission to find her missing patient who has vanished into this nightmarish realm. The movie marks the directorial debut of YouTuber Kane Parsons, who drew inspiration from his own found-footage anthology series on YouTube, infusing the film with a fresh yet chilling approach.
The cast features a strong lineup including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve in leading roles. Ejiofor is known for his extensive filmography, starring in blockbusters and critically acclaimed films such as Love Actually, Children of Men, Doctor Strange, and Venom: The Last Dance. Meanwhile, Reinsve gained recognition for her role in the Academy Award-nominated film Sentimental Value and her work in Presumed Innocent.
Supporting the leads are Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia. Duplass is notable for his performances in The Morning Show and his involvement in the Creep film series and spinoffs. Bennett appears in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Maxwell currently stars in Shrinking, and Jogia is well known for the teen sitcom Victorious and the film 56 Days.
As anticipation builds, Backrooms promises to deliver a fresh perspective on horror by blending internet lore with cinematic storytelling. With its May 2026 release date approaching, horror enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting the chance to see how this unsettling concept is brought to life on the big screen.
