According to a report from NBC 6 South Florida published on March 31, the hearing is scheduled for April 30, when the court will review the possibility of granting YNW Melly bond after years of incarceration.
This upcoming hearing follows a significant development earlier this year. On January 20, prosecutors dropped multiple serious charges against YNW Melly just as his retrial for murder was about to begin. The charges dismissed included witness tampering, directing criminal gang activities, criminal solicitation to commit murder, and conspiracy to tamper with a witness on a capital felony. Four charges in total were dropped that day.
YNW Melly's legal team, comprising attorneys Drew Findling and Carol Haughwout, issued a statement in response to the dismissals. They expressed relief over the dropped charges, stating that their investigation quickly showed no crimes had taken place. They also criticized the State for maintaining these charges for 652 days before finally abandoning them at trial’s doorstep.
The statement emphasized the restrictive conditions under which YNW Melly has been held and highlighted the importance of his potential release. His attorneys noted that gaining bond would enable him to more fully participate in preparing his defense for the upcoming legal proceedings, which they intend to contest vigorously.
YNW Melly has been detained since 2019, facing accusations related to the murders of two fellow rappers: YMW Juvy, whose real name is Christopher Thomas, Jr., and YNW Sakchaser, born Anthony Williams. His initial trial ended in a mistrial in 2023, but prosecutors have opted to move forward with a retrial scheduled for January 2027.
