AceShowbiz - The 2026 German Film Awards, known as the Lolas and regarded as Germany’s equivalent of the Oscars, have unveiled their nominations with Sound of Falling and Yellow Letters at the forefront. The family drama Sound of Falling, directed by Mascha Schilinski, received an impressive 11 nominations, while ?lker Çatak’s Berlin Film Festival-winning Yellow Letters earned nine nominations.
Both films are strong contenders in multiple categories, including the prestigious Best Director award. They will face competition from Simon Verhoeven's comedy Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke, which garnered seven nominations in total. This competition highlights a diverse range of storytelling styles being recognized this year.
In the Best Feature Film category, Sound of Falling, Yellow Letters, and Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke will compete alongside several other notable films. Fatih Akin and Herman Weigel’s Amrum received six nominations, while Anna-Malike Eigl, Thomas Wöbke, and Philipp Trauer’s 22 Lengths earned five. Felix von Boehm’s The Disappearance of Josef Mengele also stands out with seven nominations, setting up a highly competitive race for the top honor.
The Hollywood Reporter praised Sound of Falling as “a haunting meditation on womanhood and rural strife,” spotlighting four generations of young women living together in a farmhouse in northeast Germany. This film is seen as the emergence of a bold new talent in German cinema.
Regarding Yellow Letters, THR noted the film’s ambitious and enigmatic nature. ?lker Çatak’s follow-up to the tense German middle school drama The Teachers’ Lounge explores themes of authoritarian oppression, artistic conflict, and family tension. Although set in contemporary Turkey, the film was shot entirely in Germany, with no attempt to disguise its true filming location, creating a unique narrative atmosphere.
In the acting categories, the Best Lead Actress nominations include Senta Berger for Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke, Özgü Namal for Yellow Letters, and Luna Wedler for 22 Lengths. On the male side, the Best Actor nominees are Tansu Biçer for Yellow Letters, Bruno Alexander for Ach, diese Lücke, diese entsetzliche Lücke, and August Diehl for The Disappearance of Josef Mengele.
Aside from the nominations, the German Film Academy announced the winner of the biggest box office hit of the year as the slapstick comedy Western parody Manitou’s Canoe, directed by and starring Michael “Bully” Herbig. This announcement was made alongside the unveiling of the nominees for the 76th edition of the German Film Awards on Tuesday.
The awards ceremony will take place in Berlin on May 29 and will be hosted for the second consecutive year by Christian Friedel, known for his roles in The Zone of Interest, The White Lotus, and Babylon Berlin. Last year’s ceremony saw Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5 sweep the German honors. The thriller, based on the terrorist attacks at the 1972 Munich Olympics, starred Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Leonie Benesch.
