AceShowbiz - I Love Boosters marks the return of filmmaker Boots Riley. The story centers on Corvette, a resourceful young woman from Oakland portrayed by Keke Palmer. Frustrated by the fashion industry, Corvette assembles a group of inventive women who embark on a mission to steal high-end clothing and resell it at affordable prices. Their actions catch the attention of the powerful fashion mogul Christine Smith, played by Demi Moore.
The film features a cast including Taylour Paige, Naomi Ackie, Poppy Liu, Eiza González, LaKeith Stanfield, Will Poulter, and Don Cheadle. Having premiered at SXSW, I Love Boosters has a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In an interview at SXSW, ScreenRant spoke with executive producers Josh Rosenbaum and Ken Kao, as well as cast members LaKeith Stanfield, Eiza González, and Naomi Ackie. When asked what defines a Boots Riley production, Rosenbaum described it as a complex blend of elements.
Rosenbaum called I Love Boosters “a propulsive, awesome adventure” that combines social commentary with character development. He emphasized the film’s vibrant visual style.
Ken Kao praised Riley’s “very unapologetic” approach. Kasmere Trice Stanfield, an actress in the film, shared her admiration for Riley’s collaborative style. She highlighted how Riley empowers actors to have input on their roles.
She explained, “Boots really allows you, as an actor, to have a say.” She also contrasted this film with Riley’s previous work, noting that while Sorry to Bother You went in one direction, I Love Boosters presents an entirely different experience.
She went on to say that what makes the movie quintessentially Riley is its originality: “You’ve never seen anything like it before. You get to walk away with a little jewel and learn something.”
Eiza González described the film as “completely bonkers” and “out of the ordinary,” acknowledging Riley’s creativity. “He’s a bold director. He’s always been,” González said.
Music plays a significant role in I Love Boosters. The film features a strong presence of Tune-Yards. Executive producer Josh Rosenbaum revealed that the soundtrack pushes boundaries.
During the SXSW interview, LaKeith Stanfield touched on the communal nature of watching movies. He expressed excitement about starring alongside his wife in the film.
