AceShowbiz - The Shards, FX’s latest horror drama adapted from a novel by Bret Easton Ellis, is scheduled to debut later this summer, according to producer Brad Simpson. The series is based on Ellis’ 2023 book of the same name and marks another collaboration with acclaimed TV creator Ryan Murphy, who serves as the showrunner.
During a recent interview with Variety, Simpson detailed how the project came to FX after HBO initially optioned the rights. When the rights became available again, FX quickly acquired them, with Murphy joining the production because of his enthusiasm for the material. Simpson emphasized that the series captures the essence of Ellis’ work, combining a distinct 1980s atmosphere with a dark, coming-of-age thriller narrative.
The cast of The Shards features a mostly young ensemble including Kaia Gerber, Igby Rigney, Homer Gere, Graham Campbell, Hayes Warner, and Wes Bentley. Simpson described the cast as “incredibly young” and expressed confidence that their performances will surprise audiences once the show airs.
Simpson also highlighted the show's unique mood and style, comparing it to the 1980s film American Gigolo. He noted the series’ soundtrack, reminiscent of the Giorgio Moroder compositions featured in the movie, will play a significant role in defining the show's tone. The fashion and music choices are designed to evoke the era’s cultural vibe, immersing viewers in the early 1980s setting.
Ellis, renowned for his 1991 novel American Psycho—which was adapted into a successful film starring Christian Bale and others—crafted The Shards as a semi-autobiographical account of his senior year in high school. Uniquely, Ellis first released the novel as an audiobook on Patreon over a year before publishing the physical book in 2023. He is also involved in producing the FX adaptation alongside Murphy, Max Winkler, Nick Hall, Kathleen McCaffrey, and Brian Young.
Ryan Murphy has a longstanding relationship with FX, having created and produced several notable series including Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story, American Crime Story, Feud, Pose, American Sports Story, Grotesquerie, and The Beauty. Most recently, he produced Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, which concluded its run on March 26. Simpson also worked on that series, which generated significant social media buzz, especially among younger viewers discovering the 1990s public figures for the first time.
Following the success of Love Story, Murphy, Simpson, and Ellis are now focusing on bringing The Shards to the small screen. Filming began in the fall of the previous year, and while the exact premiere date is yet to be announced, fans can anticipate its arrival sometime during the summer season.
The Shards promises to blend Ellis’ signature themes of teenage angst and dark mystery with a rich 1980s aesthetic. Simpson’s remarks suggest the series will deliver a gripping mix of suspense, style, and nostalgia, appealing to both longtime fans of Ellis’ work and new viewers seeking a fresh horror-drama experience on FX.
