AceShowbiz - Russell T Davies, the acclaimed television writer, has revealed that his upcoming series Tip Toe will be his "angriest and darkest show yet," marking a distinct tonal shift from his previous work.
Speaking about the differences between Tip Toe and his earlier dystopian drama Years & Years, Davies explained that the latter was produced under the BBC’s guidance, which required a happy ending despite the story’s bleak themes. He said, "I love Years & Years but it was only made on the assistance of the BBC, which kind of meant it had to have a happy ending."
According to Davies, the world’s current state has validated his desire for a darker conclusion, as "things are just getting worse." He acknowledged enjoying the ending of Years & Years, but noted it was a condition imposed by the broadcaster that the story could not be overwhelmingly bleak.
In contrast, Tip Toe does not face the same restrictions, allowing Davies to explore a more uncompromising and intense narrative. This freedom means that viewers should expect a far darker and angrier tone than his previous projects.
Davies also anticipated that Tip Toe might provoke strong reactions, predicting the show will be labeled as "woke on a colossal scale," highlighting the provocative nature of the series’ themes.
This marks a significant creative departure for Davies, who has previously balanced socially relevant storytelling with broadcaster demands. With Tip Toe, he appears ready to push boundaries and confront viewers with a more uncompromising vision.
