AceShowbiz - With CBS launching the neo-Western series Marshals, it’s the perfect moment to revisit Yellowstone, the original Taylor Sheridan creation that wrapped up on Paramount Network in 2024. The return of Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton signals a fresh chapter for the character, who spent years living under the influence of his father, John Dutton, portrayed by Kevin Costner. Whether you are a Yellowstone veteran or completely new to the Dutton saga, understanding Kayce’s past and family dynamics is essential before Marshals premieres on CBS.
The story of Kayce Dutton begins long before the events of Yellowstone. The prequel series 1883, spanning 10 episodes, depicted the original Dutton pioneers’ journey from Fort Worth, Texas, to what would become Paradise Valley, Montana. After forging a treaty with a local Lakota tribe, they settled near the land destined to be Yellowstone National Park. The Lakota chief, Spotted Eagle (played by Graham Greene), foretold in the 1883 finale that the land would return to the Native people seven generations later. It took nearly that long for the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch to be established. By the time John Dutton assumed control, he intended to groom his sons — Lee (Dave Annable), Jamie (Wes Bentley), and Kayce — to carry on the family legacy, with support from their sister Beth (Kelly Reilly).
However, Kayce was never fully committed to ranch life. His relationship with Monica Long (Kelsey Asbille), who lived on the neighboring Broken Rock Indian Reservation, changed his path. When Kayce and Monica discovered she was pregnant, they married quickly, defying John’s wishes. In the episode “Coming Home,” John Dutton orders Kayce to force Monica to have an abortion and then to abandon her, but Kayce refuses. This defiance deepens the rift between father and son, culminating in John branding Kayce with the Dutton “Y” mark as a form of punishment. Ultimately, Kayce fled, married Monica, and embraced a new life as a U.S. Navy SEAL, serving alongside men like Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green, introduced on Marshals) and Cade McPherson.
Kayce spent a decade with the SEAL teams before returning to Montana, where he struggled with PTSD. Choosing to settle near Monica’s family on Broken Rock, he lived alongside her grandfather Felix (Rudy Ramos) and brother Robert (Jeremiah Bitsui), trying to find peace away from the ranch that had torn his family apart.
The Yellowstone series pilot “Daybreak” marks a turning point for Kayce and his family. Under tribal chairman Thomas Rainwater’s (Gil Birmingham) direction, Robert asks Kayce to help round up cattle found on the reservation. To Kayce’s shock, the cattle belong to the Dutton Ranch. John Dutton, then serving as Montana’s acting Livestock Commissioner, visits Kayce on the reservation in an attempt to mend their fractured relationship and meet his grandson Tate (Brecken Merrill) for the first time. Though hesitant, Kayce and Monica agree to reconnect with John.
However, tensions quickly escalate when Kayce finds himself caught in the crossfire between his family and the reservation. A deadly cattle dispute turns tragic when Robert kills Kayce’s brother Lee. In retaliation, Kayce kills Robert. The loss of two brothers devastates the Dutton family, leading John to persuade Kayce to bring his family back to the ranch, setting the stage for future conflicts.
Throughout the Yellowstone series, Kayce’s journey is one of identity and belonging. Season 1 explores the strained relationship between Kayce and Monica. Monica, wheelchair-bound after an unrelated attack, grows increasingly wary of the dangers surrounding the Dutton family. Feeling alienated from both the reservation and the ranch—especially after tensions with ranch foreman Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser)—the couple struggles to maintain their bond. Monica decides it’s best for their son Tate to be raised away from the Dutton influence, despite her love for Kayce.
Season 2 sees the couple reconcile, with Monica and Tate returning to the ranch. After some time, John convinces Kayce to accept his inheritance of the ranch. This season also introduces the Beck Brothers, ruthless businessmen trying to wrest control of the ranch from John. When Tate is kidnapped by the Beck Brothers, Kayce taps back into his SEAL training to rescue his son, an ordeal that deeply strains the family but also solidifies Kayce’s commitment to his role in the Dutton legacy.
In Season 3, Kayce takes on the additional responsibility of commissioner of the Livestock Association, balancing his duties as a rancher and law enforcement officer. This dual role challenges him as he tries to protect Yellowstone’s interests while managing his personal life. The season ends dramatically with “The World is Purple,” where an assassination attempt nearly kills John, Beth, and Kayce, shaking the family to its core.
Season 4 brings another significant moment for Kayce. He accepts an invitation from Rainwater and Mo Brings Plenty to formally join the tribe. This entails a grueling four-day wilderness ceremony without food or water. During this time, Kayce experiences a vision of his family’s demise, leaving him uncertain but aware that he will face a critical choice between the ranch and his immediate family. Around this time, Monica reveals she is pregnant again, adding further complexity to Kayce’s future.
As Yellowstone concluded, Kayce stood at a crossroads, torn between his heritage and the family he’s building with Monica and Tate. The new series Marshals promises to explore Kayce’s story from a fresh perspective, following his evolution beyond the shadow of John Dutton and into new roles that challenge his beliefs and identity.
Understanding Kayce’s complex history, from his early defiance of family expectations to his military service and eventual return to Montana, is key to appreciating his character’s growth in Marshals. His journey reflects themes of loyalty, legacy, and the struggle to reconcile personal desires with family duty — elements that have defined the Dutton saga and will continue to shape Kayce’s path as the story unfolds on CBS.
