Pixar's new film 'Hoppers' is #1 on Disney+ before its 2026 theatrical release. Explore the studio's journey from record-breaking hits to box office challenges.
- March 18, 2026
AceShowbiz - The latest Pixar film, Hoppers, has quickly risen to the number one spot on Disney+ in the United States—even before its official theatrical debut. This achievement is notable since the movie is not scheduled to be released in theaters until March 6, 2026.
Following a series of hits and misses, Pixar’s recent projects have seen varied success. The studio’s previous release, Inside Out 2, garnered outstanding reviews and became the highest-grossing animated film of all time globally, earning nearly $1.7 billion. Despite being surpassed by titles like Ne Zha 2 and Zootopia 2, it remains one of the top 10 highest-grossing films ever.
However, Pixar’s subsequent movie, Elio, while critically well-received, underperformed at the box office, grossing just $154 million worldwide against its estimated $150 million production budget. This inconsistency has raised concerns about the studio’s financial trajectory moving forward.
In this context, Hoppers securing the top position in the Disney+ U.S. streaming chart is a promising sign. The version available to stream is not the full film but a four-minute special preview featuring exclusive footage. This preview’s popularity surpasses other notable titles currently trending on Disney+, including The Princess and the Frog, Ice Age, Prey, the live-action The Little Mermaid, and Tron: Ares. Globally, the preview ranks sixth on Disney+’s chart.
The film’s story centers around a near-future world where scientists have developed a technology allowing human consciousness to transfer into robotic animal bodies. The protagonist, 19-year-old Mabel Tanaka, voiced by Piper Curda, inadvertently triggers an animal uprising when she inhabits the mind of a robotic beaver. The voice cast includes well-known talents like Bobby Moynihan, Jon Hamm, Kathy Najimy, Dave Franco, Eduardo Franco, Sam Richardson, Ego Nwodim, Vanessa Bayer, and Meryl Streep.
Directed by Daniel Chong with a screenplay by Jesse Andrews (who previously wrote Pixar’s Luca), Hoppers is set to run for 105 minutes. The producers include Nicole Paradis Grindle.
While Pixar’s recent box office results have been uneven, the early streaming success of Hoppers’ preview suggests renewed interest in the studio’s new original content. Industry analysts project that the movie could earn between $40 million and $50 million domestically during its opening weekend, potentially signaling a turnaround for Pixar’s non-franchise films.
The March 6 release date may also work in the film’s favor, as it faces limited competition in the children’s and family movie market at that time. Sony’s GOAT, which premiered on February 14, will have been in theaters for nearly a month, possibly clearing the way for Hoppers to attract a broad audience.
Overall, the combination of strong streaming interest and optimistic box office forecasts positions Hoppers as a key title for Pixar this year, potentially restoring some momentum after recent mixed results.
