AceShowbiz - Riley Green, the country singer known for hits like "There Was This Girl," recently experienced a painful injury during a concert in Melbourne, Australia. The 37-year-old artist was struck in the ear by a fan who threw a cell phone at him while he was performing, resulting in five stitches.
The incident took place at the Margaret Court Arena on a Saturday night, where Green was mid-performance. Video footage from the event, widely circulated on social media, shows the moment the phone hits him. Afterward, the star set down his guitar and requested, "Can we get the house lights on real quick?" before identifying the person responsible and asking security to remove them from the venue. According to Billboard, the individual who threw the phone was promptly ejected.
Following the confrontation, the camera showed Green with blood trickling down his neck from his ear. Stage crew members quickly came to his aid, tending to the wound by wiping away the blood. The singer then asked the audience, "Am I bleeding?" and humorously added, "Y’all see how tough I am?" demonstrating his resilience despite the injury.
After the show, Green updated fans on his condition via Instagram Stories. He shared a graphic photo of his ear stitched up, captioned, "5 stitches later... sewed up." In another Story, he posted an image displaying a phone tether clipped to a belt loop, jokingly offering to distribute them at future shows to prevent similar incidents.
Additional footage shared by Green includes moments from backstage where he receives treatment for the wound, as well as a photo capturing the blood running down his neck. This was set to the tune of Merle Haggard’s 1970 classic, "The Fightin’ Side of Me."
This is not an isolated case of musicians being harmed by objects hurled by fans. In 2023, pop singer Bebe Rexha had to receive stitches after a phone struck her face during a New York City concert, with the perpetrator subsequently arrested and charged with assault. That same year, artists Harry Styles and Kelsea Ballerini were also hit by thrown items while performing onstage.
Concerns over this disturbing trend have even led superstars like Taylor Swift to address the issue directly with their audiences. During her 2023 Eras Tour stop in Buenos Aires, Swift expressed her discomfort, saying that while she appreciates fans bringing gifts, she implored them not to throw anything onstage, calling the behavior unsettling.
Meanwhile, Adele took a much firmer stance during her 2023 Las Vegas residency. Brandishing a t-shirt cannon, she issued a blunt warning to anyone considering throwing objects at her, stating, "I f---ing dare you. Dare you to throw something at me and I'll f---ing kill you."
As for Riley Green, his quick response onstage and openness about the injury highlight both the risks performers face and their determination to keep entertaining fans despite such challenges. Representatives for Green have not yet provided additional comments regarding the incident.
