Shocked fans! Marvel explores a surprising romance between Juggernaut and Magik in X-Men #25. Is this mutant pairing a mistake or a brilliant twist?

AceShowbiz - Marvel’s X-Men franchise is currently exploring one of its most surprising romantic developments yet, focusing on two powerful mutants: Juggernaut and Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik. This storyline has sparked mixed reactions, with some fans shocked by the pairing, while others are intrigued by the potential connection.
In the recent X-Men #25, written by Jed MacKay with art by Tony S. Daniel and others, the team confronts the Fenris Twins, a pair of neo-Nazi mutants aligned with a white supremacist group. During the battle, when Magik is attacked, Juggernaut responds with fierce protectiveness, warning the villains, "Last mistake you ever make, hitting her." This moment clearly signals more than mere friendship developing between the two characters.
Since the launch of X-Men #1 in 2024, Magik and Juggernaut have taken on roles as the team’s heavy hitters. Their partnership rekindles their 2019 collaboration from Savage Avengers. Both characters share a blunt, almost reckless approach to combat and have endured traumatic pasts, which shape their willingness to bend moral boundaries to defend mutantkind, especially with Juggernaut’s allegiance to the X-Men solidified during the Krakoan era.
Juggernaut’s emotional investment in Magik became more evident during the Age of Revelation event. Magik’s death in that storyline deeply affected Juggernaut, leading him to abandon the team temporarily. In the Amazing X-Men tie-in, Juggernaut assumes the role of the loyal "Demon Knight" serving Magik’s darker persona, the Darkchild, who had possessed her body after death. Initially, this was interpreted as a sign of Juggernaut’s disillusionment with Cyclops’ leadership. However, it now appears more likely that his devotion stems from love for Magik herself.
As for Magik’s feelings, there is no explicit indication that she reciprocates Juggernaut’s emotions yet. However, her sexuality, hinted at in New Mutants #5 from 2020, is pansexual, suggesting openness to relationships beyond conventional bounds, including with non-human individuals like Juggernaut. Furthermore, both characters have demonic ties—Magik as a Demon Lord and Juggernaut’s connection to the mystical entity Cyttorak—making their dark histories potentially less of a barrier to romance.
Despite this, the significant age difference between Juggernaut and Magik could be a point of controversy. Magik is generally portrayed as being in her mid-20s, while Juggernaut’s age is less clearly defined but often assumed to be in his 30s or 40s. Marvel’s retcon of Juggernaut’s military history—removing his Korean War veteran status and placing him in fictional conflicts—adds ambiguity to his exact age. This disparity may raise concerns, especially considering Magik’s traumatic childhood, which involved abduction and abuse by the demonic Belasco. Fans might be wary of pairing her with an older character who has a complicated past involving villainy and violence.
Given Magik’s background and the sensitivity around her experiences with Belasco, a romance with Juggernaut could be seen as problematic by some fans. Illyana’s history with coercion and trauma has long been a defining aspect of her character, which may make a relationship with another older, morally ambiguous figure difficult to accept.
It remains possible that Marvel is setting up a different kind of bond between Juggernaut and Magik, one that may not evolve into a traditional romance. However, with Illyana already having a well-known familial connection through her brother Colossus, the nature of their relationship is especially noteworthy. As the X-Men comics progress, readers can expect to see how this narrative unfolds.
X-Men #25 was released on February 18, and will likely provide further insight into this developing storyline.
