AceShowbiz - Following the successful big-screen debut of another major franchise, Netflix is bringing its hit live-action adaptation to cinemas. The streamer has confirmed that One Piece season 2 will receive a theatrical release for its premiere.
The first two episodes of the new season, subtitled Into the Grand Line, will be shown in 200 theaters across the US, Canada, and Japan on March 10th. Showings in the US and Canada will begin at 6 p.m. local time. Tickets are scheduled to go on sale Thursday, Feb. 26, at 8 a.m. PT / 11 a.m. ET.
This move reflects Netflix's evolving strategy for its biggest properties. The streamer recently released the Stranger Things season 5 finale in theaters alongside its streaming debut over New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. That limited run screened in hundreds of locations across North America.
The Stranger Things theatrical event generated over $25 million in revenue for theaters through concession voucher sales. Screenings expanded to more than 620 cinemas with over 1.1 million RSVPs before release. This outcome demonstrated a strong audience appetite for event-style theater experiences tied to major TV shows, even when available at home.
Netflix's confidence in giving One Piece a theatrical rollout is bolstered by that success. The live-action series, based on Eiichiro Oda's manga, became one of Netflix's most successful adaptations upon its premiere. Season 1 earned an 84% critic score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, reaching Top 10 positions in 93 countries and securing the #1 spot in 46 nations.
The source manga has sold over 500 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling manga series in history. One Piece season 2 will follow Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and his crew—Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Usopp (Jacob Romero), and Sanji (Taz Skylar)—as they travel to the legendary Grand Line.
With only two weeks remaining until the show's return on Netflix, the theatrical release serves as both a major marketing push and a celebration of the show's status as a global franchise. If the March 10 screenings perform well, it could lead to similar future releases for additional seasons of One Piece or other major Netflix originals.
One Piece season 2 premieres March 10 on Netflix and in select theaters in the US, Canada, and Japan.
