AceShowbiz - It's nearly impossible to envision The Rocky Horror Picture Show without Tim Curry's iconic portrayal of the undefinable Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Yet, this cinematic cornerstone almost saw a different, equally famous face in the role. Decades after its debut, The Rocky Horror Picture Show continues to captivate global audiences, a testament not only to its groundbreaking narrative but overwhelmingly to Curry's one-of-a-kind, electrifying performance. While talents like Susan Sarandon and Richard O'Brien were brilliant, it's Curry who truly anchored the film's unique spirit.
Given its roots in musical theater, it’s no surprise that The Rocky Horror Picture Show has attracted numerous celebrated musicians throughout its history. Famously, Meat Loaf delivered a memorable performance as Eddie in both the Broadway production and the film adaptation. Subsequent stage casts have also featured notable recording artists such as Joan Jett and Nicole Scherzinger. However, a name far more globally recognized than any of these musical legends came remarkably close to stepping into Tim Curry's shoes as Frank-N-Furter for the movie.
According to Tim Curry himself, speaking via the LA Times, there was significant interest from both the studio and the legendary Rolling Stones frontman, Mick Jagger, in playing Frank-N-Furter in the 1975 film adaptation. Curry recounted: "When the movie was a definite thing, there were several big stars who wanted to play the part. Mick Jagger wanted to play it and he would’ve done a great job if you saw Performance. But [Jim Sharman, director] said he wanted me to do it. I don’t think the studio was happy that he turned down Mick." This revelation highlights the immense pressure on director Jim Sharman.
Curry had already perfected the Frank-N-Furter role in the original London stage production, making director Jim Sharman's decision to cast him over Jagger a pivotal move for maintaining the project's authenticity. This commitment to retaining the original magic extended to other cast members, with Richard O'Brien, Little Nell, and Patricia Quinn also transitioning from stage to screen. By specifically retaining Tim Curry, The Rocky Horror Picture Show took a crucial step — to the ri-igh-igh-igh-ight — towards preserving the original production's beloved spirit and unique theatricality.
While Tim Curry humbly suggested Mick Jagger "would've done a great job," he undoubtedly undersold the singular impact of his own performance. Many actors have since attempted to fill Curry's fishnet stockings, from David Arquette to Jason Donavan. While some have been good, and a few even great, none have truly matched the phenomenal, definitive portrayal that Curry delivered. Every subsequent Frank-N-Furter has essentially strived to merely approach the towering heights Curry reached. There is little doubt that The Rocky Horror Picture Show would not hold its current cherished, cult status without Tim Curry's iconic, irreplaceable performance.
