AceShowbiz - The Creamerie series, a joint collaboration between the three lead actresses and director Roseanne Liang, is a dystopian satire that conceals neither its influences nor its intentional timing. Premiering in 2021, roughly one year after the COVID-19 pandemic began, Creamerie was partially inspired by The Handmaid's Tale and addresses topical social commentary with the proper severity, while also comedically lampooning oppressive structures.
The story takes place in a post-patriarchal world where a worldwide virus has claimed the lives of every individual born with Y sex chromosomes, leaving only those with XX chromosomes (mostly but not entirely cisgender women) to rebuild society. In this new world, a corporate organization called Wellness has assumed control of New Zealand's Hiro Valley, implementing women-centric societal, professional, reproductive health, and language reforms. However, not everyone is convinced of Wellness' intentions, including Alex, a sharp-tongued cynic who rebels against the system.
As the series progresses, Alex's story intertwines with those of her sister-in-law, Jaime, and their friend Pip, who are more starry-eyed about their new society. Jaime, a grieving widow and mother, hopes to win the pregnancy lottery, while Pip is more optimistic about the future. Through their experiences, Creamerie explores themes of oppression, rebellion, and the complexities of a post-patriarchal society.
With its unique blend of sci-fi and comedy, Creamerie is a wildly entertaining and thought-provoking series that challenges its viewers to think critically about the world they live in. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Creamerie is not just a TV series, but a commentary on our current society and the dangers of oppressive systems. As the saying goes, "absolute power corrupts absolutely," and Creamerie is a stark reminder of the importance of questioning authority and fighting for individual freedom.
