AceShowbiz - The Predator franchise has achieved a remarkable feat: a stunning comeback from near obscurity. While the original 1987 film, Predator, remains a beloved classic of 80s sci-fi action, its subsequent sequels largely failed to capture the same magic, struggling critically and commercially, leaving the series seemingly dead.
Following the success of Predator (1987), its direct sequel, Predator 2, faced commercial challenges and negative initial reviews, though it later garnered a cult following. Attempts at crossover films with the Alien franchise were largely seen as missed opportunities. Even Predators in 2010, despite an awesome cast and grossing over $125 million, received mixed reviews and made little lasting impact. The nadir came with The Predator in 2018, which garnered the most negative critical response in the franchise's history, even though it still managed to pull in around $160 million, indicating a persistent fan desire for quality entries. By this point, the franchise was widely considered to be beyond saving, accumulating more misses than hits.
However, a surprising turnaround arrived in 2022 with a prequel that completely rejuvenated the series. Filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg, previously acclaimed for his work on 10 Cloverfield Lane, took the helm. His vision resulted in Prey, a bold installment set in the 1700s. Prey defied expectations, becoming the best-reviewed film in the entire Predator franchise.
Trachtenberg masterfully utilized the historical setting, crafting a compelling narrative that introduced Naru, portrayed brilliantly by Amber Midthunder. Naru quickly established herself as arguably the franchise's most compelling protagonist – a fierce Comanche warrior determined to prove her worth against both her tribe's expectations and the ultimate hunter. Prey not only delivered thrilling action and suspense but also deepened the mythology of the iconic alien hunter, reminding audiences why they fell in love with the original concept. This unexpected success has undoubtedly breathed new life into the Predator universe, setting a high bar for future installments and demonstrating the power of fresh perspective.
